A woman has sparked a debate online after revealing how a fellow passenger allegedly cried for three hours because she refused to give up her seat so the stranger could sit beside her husband.

The incident unfolded aboard a Turkish Airlines flight from Istanbul to Washington, DC, where passenger Tomiko Harvey found herself caught up in an uncomfortable disagreement over seating arrangements.

But what made the situation particularly difficult was the reason Tomiko had been travelling in the first place.

She was returning home from Kazakhstan after the death of her father.

And having specifically purchased an aisle seat for the lengthy journey, she wasn’t prepared to surrender it simply because another passenger wanted to sit next to her partner.

Sharing her experience on Instagram, Tomiko explained that a woman sitting beside her had asked whether she would swap places with her husband, who was seated two rows ahead.

However, agreeing would have meant spending the ten-hour flight in a middle seat rather than the aisle position she had paid for.

Tomiko declined.

And according to her account, the woman did not take the rejection particularly well.

Explaining what happened in her original Instagram post, Tomiko wrote: “I refused to give up my aisle seat because a lady missed her husband.

“The ultimate white tears on a long haul flight from Istanbul to DC.

“I was flying home from Kazakhstan on @turkishairlines because my dad passed away, which is why I look so terrible in this video.

“But on my connecting flight from Istanbul to DC, a woman asked me to give up my aisle seat so she could sit next to her husband on a 10+ hour flight.

“I said no.”

While Tomiko considered the matter settled, she claimed the passenger became visibly upset and continued crying for several hours.

Eventually, she asked whether somebody had died, given how distressed the woman appeared to be.

But according to Tomiko, the passenger explained that she was simply upset about being separated from her husband.

Continuing her account, Tomiko wrote: “She cried for 3 hours. I finally asked her if someone died, because who cries for 3 hours? She said nobody died. She just missed her husband and whose shoulder would she lay her head on.

“Her husband was two rows up in a middle seat with his headphones on, sleeping in heavenly peace the entire flight.

“She really wanted me in a middle seat for 10 hours so she could lay her head on his shoulder.”

Despite dealing with her own grief, Tomiko maintained that she shouldn’t have to sacrifice her comfort to accommodate another couple.

She also claimed the husband appeared entirely unbothered by the arrangement, spending the journey asleep with his headphones on.

And when the aircraft eventually landed, Tomiko admitted she couldn’t resist making one final remark.

Recalling what she told the passenger, Tomiko wrote: “When we landed, I told her, “Good job. Look at you surviving without your husband for 10 hours.””

She then joked about the strength of her own marriage, adding: “Now I need to reevaluate my marriage because I clearly do not love my husband enough.”

After sharing the encounter online, Tomiko questioned why some passengers expect strangers to change seats to accommodate their personal preferences.

She asked her followers: “What is wrong with people that they feel they can ask a stranger to switch seats, especially on a long haul flight?

“Is it rude to refuse to switch seats on a plane? If you want to sit together, book together or pay for seat selection.”

Her account prompted a wave of responses, with many Instagram users agreeing that she had every right to remain where she was.

One Instagram user supported Tomiko’s decision, commenting: “You had every right to keep your seat. Period. Hands down.”

Another commenter agreed, writing: “I pay for my seat and I picked that seat for a reason…. They can do the same”

A third person added: “You’re right. They’re wrong. Case closed. Boom.”

Others were particularly critical of the woman’s reported reaction, questioning why sitting a short distance from her husband had caused so much distress.

One commenter wrote: “That woman was acting like a 5 year old! Who cries on a flight for their husband a few rows ahead! Come on!!”

Another Instagram user joked: “He probably wanted to be away from her!”

Meanwhile, a different commenter argued that passengers shouldn’t be expected to accept a less desirable seat, writing: “If you aren’t giving me a better seat or a similar seat, I am not switching!!”

As the discussion continued, Tomiko returned to Instagram with a follow-up post explaining why she felt so strongly about the situation.

She reiterated that she had deliberately chosen her seat because she wanted easy access to the toilet without having to climb over other passengers.

In her follow-up post, Tomiko wrote: “Turkish Airlines seat swap, Part 2: I will die on this hill, I am not switching my airline seat, and here is why.

“I was flying home from Kazakhstan after my father passed away, and I purchased an aisle seat so I would not have to keep stepping over someone to get to the bathroom.

“The young lady in the middle seat next to me wanted me to switch with her husband, who was two rows up, so she could have my aisle. Turkish Airlines assigns seats.

“If you want to sit together, purchase your seats.

“And to the racists in my comments, none of it changes my answer.”

Her follow-up also revealed that the debate had attracted racist comments, although she made clear that the criticism would not change her position.

The encounter has reignited a familiar debate about airline etiquette and whether passengers should feel obligated to accommodate requests from strangers.

While some travellers are happy to swap seats, others believe the decision should remain entirely with the person being asked.

And for Tomiko, the answer was simple: She had booked the seat she wanted, and that meant she was keeping it.
