A woman who reportedly asked to be upgraded on a flight because she didn’t want to sit next to another passenger’s dog ended up watching the animal and its owner get moved to first class instead.

The incident was shared on social media by a woman named Chantal Rochelle, who claimed a fellow passenger had complained about being seated alongside her eight-pound Maltipoo, Capri.

However, rather than granting the unhappy traveller’s request, a flight attendant apparently decided that Chantal and her four-legged companion deserved the upgrade.

Chantal shared the encounter on Threads, explaining how an uncomfortable situation quickly turned into an unexpected first-class experience.

“The woman next to me on the plane said she didn’t want to sit next to me and Capri, my 8-pound maltipoo, and asked the flight attendant to upgrade her,” Chantal recalled. “The flight attendant said ‘one moment’, disappeared for five minutes, then came back and upgraded… me. Straight to first class. The look on her face belonged in a museum.”

The post immediately attracted attention, with thousands of people reacting to the flight attendant’s decision.

Chantal’s original post received more than 64,000 likes and over 5,000 comments, with many users praising the unexpected outcome.

She subsequently returned to the comments to express her appreciation for the crew member who had handled the situation.

“Huge shoutout to the Black flight attendant who clocked the situation instantly and made sure Capri and I were good. Real ones still exist. Wishing her endless blessings,” Chantal wrote.

Chantal also shared a photograph of Capri, revealing the small, fluffy dog at the centre of the disagreement. Alongside the photograph, Chantal simply wrote: “My baby boy”. AND JUST LOOK HOW CUTE!!

While the original disagreement appeared to stem from the other passenger’s reluctance to sit beside a dog, many people responding to the story struggled to understand why anyone would object to having Capri as a travelling companion.

One user, @catspolitics, admitted that sitting next to an animal would actually make their flight more enjoyable.

“It is literally my dream to sit next to a dog on a flight! I can’t understand people who act like this. But Capri and you deserved that upgrade,” one person typed.

Another commenter was equally enthusiastic about the outcome, writing: “First of all, that is karma at its finest!!! Second, I’d ask to hold your dog. What could be more comforting on a flight??”

Others suggested they would happily pay more for the opportunity to sit alongside Capri. “I would pay extra to sit next to Capri”, wrote @procurious.

Meanwhile, @marisa_ascone proposed a potential solution for airlines dealing with passengers who have different preferences about travelling near animals.

“If airlines would offer a button that said ‘would you like to sit next to a dog’ upon booking, bam, problem solved,” they commented. “I would LOVE to sit next to a dog. I would pay EXTRA to sit next to a dog this cute, what is wrong with people?!”

The discussion also attracted someone who identified themselves as a former flight attendant.

User @anaismoniq praised the crew member’s response, suggesting they had witnessed similar situations during their own time working in aviation. “As a former [Flight Attendant], who’s had the pleasure of being in this scenario, I lovvvvve that my fellow girlies are standing up to bullies too,” they wrote.

Another commenter, @sulovebug, revealed that even having a severe dog allergy wouldn’t stop them from wanting to sit near Capri, typing: “I am allergic to dogs. Like break out in a rash and will have a hard time breathing allergic. I’d 1000% rather sit next to any and all dogs than a person. Especially your precious Capri.”

The support continued, with @shannenbird declaring: “When on a plane it’s safe to say we all choose the dog over the man.”

User @anais831nyc also expressed disappointment at missing out on such a seatmate: “I would have loved that seat. Look at that cutie. Good for you and your pupper.”

Although the comments overwhelmingly supported Chantal and Capri, the screenshots provide only her account of the incident, with no explanation from the other passenger or the airline.

It is therefore unclear why the woman objected to sitting beside the dog or what prompted the flight attendant to offer Chantal the upgrade. Of course, some people with allergies will have struggled to sit next to a dog for the duration of a flight… but we also don’t know the manner in which they asked.

Nevertheless, the story clearly struck a chord with social media users, many of whom felt the crew member had handled the disagreement perfectly. (I mean, dogs are much better than people anyway.)
