Londoners are no strangers to unusual sights, but two knights charging towards each other on Lime Bikes might just be one of the capital’s most bizarre spectacles yet.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!Hundreds of people descended on London Fields on Saturday afternoon to witness a medieval-inspired jousting event, swapping traditional horses for electric rental bikes.
The unusual gathering was organised by East London artist Jack Carden and actor ‘Camtholomew the First’, who managed to turn what initially started as a joke into a hugely popular community event.
What began as a lighthearted idea quickly gained traction locally, attracting spectators of all ages who were eager to see the modern-day knights in action.
And the organisers certainly committed to the occasion.
Pictures shared on social media showed the pair dressed in full medieval attire, complete with metal armour, chainmail and flowing capes.
Even their Lime Bikes received a medieval makeover, with metal accessories added to complete the spectacle.
Speaking to LBC, Camtholomew revealed that dressing as a knight is nothing unusual for him.
In fact, he was wearing a suit of armour when he first met Jack, an encounter that ultimately inspired the idea of organising a Lime Bike joust.
“I love interacting with the public and allowing people to smile by simply what you wear, and that was part of the inspiration.
“Nobody’s actually done this before, so why not do something cool and bring people together?” the actor told LBC.
Despite the event’s unconventional nature, the organisers were pleasantly surprised by the reception they received from authorities.
“We expected the police to shut us down. [But] they were really lovely.”
The gathering also proved a hit online, with social media users praising the pair for creating something entertaining that brought the local community together.
“I love the uk so much,” wrote one impressed spectator.
Another perfectly summed up the occasion, commenting: “Nothing brings people together quite like a joust,”
Others were already suggesting potential locations for future jousting battles across London.
Of course, charging around on electric bikes isn’t without its risks.
Lime Bikes have previously been linked to serious leg injuries, with some riders describing their legs as “shattered to pieces.”
The injuries have reportedly become common enough for doctors to use the term “Lime Bike Leg.”
Fortunately, the medieval armour appeared to serve Camtholomew reasonably well.
He told LBC that the event had gone about as well as he could have hoped, although he did emerge with one unfortunate souvenir: a bruised backside.
Rather amusingly, it was the only part of his body that wasn’t protected by armour.
And anyone who missed the first instalment could soon get another opportunity to witness the madness.
Camtholomew has already pledged to organise Lime Bike Jousting II, meaning London’s most unlikely medieval sporting event might not be a one-off after all.
