Emergency services were called to the wildlife park near Doncaster at around 1:35PM on Saturday after the man was seen entering the tiger enclosure, The Guardian reports.

South Yorkshire Police said the tiger subsequently attacked the man, causing serious injuries. Despite the efforts of emergency services, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The tiger involved, named Altai, remained inside his enclosure and was unharmed.

Following the tragedy, Yorkshire Wildlife Park closed while authorities worked to establish exactly what had happened.

In an initial statement, the park said: “We can confirm that a serious incident has occurred today at the tiger enclosure.

“Our emergency response procedures were immediately activated, and emergency services are currently attending the scene.

“We are working closely with the authorities to ascertain exactly what happened. The safety and wellbeing of our visitors, staff and animals remain our highest priority.

“The park is now closed and will remain closed tomorrow.”

The following day, the park issued another statement confirming the man’s death and offering its sympathies to his family and loved ones.

It also addressed the large number of people who had apparently contacted the park with concerns over what would happen to Altai.

The statement read: “We would like to thank everyone who has expressed their concern following yesterday’s tragic incident.

“Our thoughts and heartfelt sympathies remain with the family and loved ones of the man who sadly lost his life.

“The park will be closed today while the staff team who were deeply affected by events receive specialist support.

“Many, many people have contacted us about Altai, the tiger. We can reassure everyone that he is safe and well and will not be euthanised as a result of this incident.”

Police said the man’s family had been informed and were receiving support from specialist officers.

The force has also urged people not to share videos of the incident which have been circulating online.

One visitor described the evacuation as “frightening and confusing”, saying people inside the park initially had no idea what was happening.

She said: “At first, we were all scared and confused because we had no idea what was going on. Different routes had been closed off, and staff were positioned around the park directing visitors where to go.

“The scariest part was not knowing what was happening.”

The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the man’s death remains ongoing.
