Few food debates have divided households quite like the question of where an opened bottle of ketchup actually belongs.

Some insist it should sit alongside the other condiments in the fridge, while others can’t understand why anyone would willingly pour cold sauce over a hot plate of chips.

But Heinz has now made its position very clear: ketchup belongs in the fridge.

The company previously sparked plenty of discussion after asking people where they stored their ketchup, with a poll on X of 2,342 people showing just how close the debate really is.

Some 63.2% opted for the fridge, while 36.8% backed the cupboard.

Heinz then delivered its own verdict in emphatic fashion, writing: “FYI: Ketchup. goes. in. the. fridge!!!”

And there’s more behind that answer than simply settling an internet argument.

According to the product information on Heinz bottles, ketchup should be refrigerated once opened and consumed within eight weeks.

Olivia Lennon, from Heinz Tomato, to the Daily Mail: “There was only ever one correct answer and we’re happy to share with Heinz Tomato Ketchup lovers that our ketchup has to be in the fridge.

“Although we’re aware many Heinz Tomato Ketchup fans have been storing their ketchup in the cupboard, we do recommend refrigeration after opening.

“This is the best way to maintain the delicious tangy taste of our Heinz Tomato Ketchup that you know and love.”

Unsurprisingly, that didn’t stop members of Team Cupboard from fighting their corner.

One person argued: “Cupboard, who wants cold sauce on their fry up?”

Another simply said: “Cupboard next to the brown sauce.”

And when someone challenged Heinz directly, writing: “No it doesn’t. You stick to production and I’ll deal with the consumption,” the company wasn’t backing down.

Heinz replied: “Put it in the fridge or I dunno how to function.”

Another person insisted: “Never, ever has it ever gone in my fridge, nor anybody elses.”

Heinz responded: “It does and they do. Case (fridge) closed.”

So while the argument around the dinner table probably isn’t going anywhere, Heinz’s official answer couldn’t be much clearer.

Once that bottle has been opened, it’s heading for the fridge.
