Noemi “Emi” Vatavuk was alone with her mother, Aidan Wilkie, when the emergency unfolded in Rusk, Texas.

Despite being just three years old, Emi managed to FaceTime her grandparents in Georgia, around 700 miles away, to let them know something was wrong.

Her grandparents then contacted 911, setting in motion a rescue effort in which Emi would play a crucial role.

As paramedics from UT Health East Texas made their way to the apartment, the youngster stayed on the call with her grandparents and helped guide first responders towards where she and her mum were, per PEOPLE.

Emi’s grandparents explained during the call that they had previously coached her on what to do if she ever found herself in an emergency situation.

That preparation proved invaluable.

Wilkie later recalled one of the few things she could remember from the ordeal – her young daughter attempting to comfort her as she dealt with the medical emergency.

“The only thing I do remember from everything was the fact that she was rubbing my hair. I could hear briefly [her saying], ‘Mommy, it’s gonna be okay,’ ” Wilkie said.

But Emi’s job wasn’t finished once help had been called.

In a recording of the 911 call, her grandfather explained that his granddaughter was attempting to unlock the apartment’s front door so the emergency responders could get inside.

With the deadbolt out of her reach, the three-year-old reportedly stood on a chair in an effort to reach it.

Her determination even prompted a reaction from the dispatcher handling the emergency.

“Oh my goodness. She’s doing so good,” the dispatcher said.

Emi eventually succeeded in opening the door before helping guide the arriving first responders inside the apartment.

Tim Spurgeon, an EMT with UT Health East Texas, explained that crews already knew to look out for the youngster as they arrived at the scene.

“We kept getting told, ‘She’s here! She’s here!’ ” Spurgeon said, describing Emi’s actions as, “Very courageous and very brave.”

Her efforts did not go unnoticed.

Emi was later honoured during a ceremony recognising what she had done to help her mother.

The three-year-old received a certificate as well as a teddy bear and a stethoscope – a fitting collection of gifts for someone who had already demonstrated extraordinary composure in an emergency.

For Wilkie, however, there was an even simpler way to describe her daughter following the ordeal.

“She is for sure my hero above anything else,” she said.
