A group of police officers swapped their uniforms for superhero costumes to give children in hospital a surprise they won’t forget anytime soon.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!Officers from the Miami Police Department transformed themselves into some of the world’s most recognisable superheroes before visiting young patients at Holtz Children’s Hospital, per ABC7.
Rather than Batman’s famous Gotham City, this particular superhero team descended on Miami dressed as Batgirl, Black Panther, Captain America and Spider-Man.
The visit was organised after the police department came up with the idea and teamed up with the children’s hospital to make it happen.
For youngsters undergoing treatment, the unexpected appearance provided a welcome distraction from the medical problems they were facing.
But the officers were keen to make one thing clear: despite being the ones wearing the costumes, they didn’t consider themselves the real superheroes in the building.
An unidentified officer dressed as Spider-Man explained: “For us to have the opportunity to come to them, give them some joy, give them some happiness, and also let them know that they are actually the ones that are the superheroes – not us. They are the superheroes. Their strength is just something that’s so motivational that it’s a great opportunity for us to be a part of.”
And judging by the children’s reactions, the surprise certainly had the desired effect.
The costumed officers made their way around the hospital, visiting youngsters in their rooms and appearing at their doorways dressed as characters they would normally only expect to see on television or in films.
For the police officers involved, seeing the patients’ faces light up made the entire experience worthwhile.
The officer added: “Just seeing the smiles on these kids’ faces as we approached their doorway, as we approach their rooms, just to see the joy that somebody came out to visit them and obviously somebody that’s somewhat of a celebrity. Their reaction was the best feeling in the world.”
That feeling was shared by the other officers who took part in the visit.
It was a relatively simple idea, but one that gave children dealing with difficult circumstances an opportunity to forget about hospital life for a while and enjoy meeting some familiar superheroes instead.
There was, however, one issue the team couldn’t settle before leaving.
Despite Batgirl, Black Panther, Captain America and Spider-Man all making appearances, the officers couldn’t agree on which character had proved the most popular with the children.
For the youngsters receiving the surprise visits, choosing a favourite may have been beside the point.
The costumes might have belonged to fictional heroes, but the officers themselves were more interested in celebrating the strength of the children they had come to see.
