Angelina Jolie is no stranger to having millions of people discussing her every move, but it’s unlikely she expected her handwriting to become quite so fascinating.

A handwritten note attributed to the Oscar-winning actress has resurfaced online, leaving social media users divided over whether they can actually understand what she’s written.

The message was reportedly left for staff at the Aldemar Olympian Village in Skafidia, Greece, where Jolie stayed while working on Maria, the 2024 biopic centred on legendary opera singer Maria Callas.

Originally shared by the resort back in 2023, the thank-you note has now found an entirely new audience after resurfacing on X.

And rather than its contents, it’s Jolie’s distinctive handwriting that has got everyone talking.

According to BuzzFeed, a post featuring the note amassed more than 8.4 million views on X as people attempted to decipher the actress’s cursive.

At first glance, it’s not difficult to see why it has prompted so much discussion.

Jolie appears to have written the message in a loose and fast-moving cursive style, with letters connected together and several words seemingly flowing into one another.

For some people attempting to read it, that proved a serious challenge.

Others, however, couldn’t understand what all the fuss was about, insisting they were able to make sense of the message without much difficulty.

And that disagreement has transformed an otherwise unremarkable celebrity thank-you note into something of an accidental internet experiment.

Rather than simply deciding whether Jolie has messy handwriting, the conversation has expanded into a debate about people’s ability to read cursive in general.

Some have suggested there could be a generational element involved, arguing that those who spent more time learning and using cursive handwriting at school are likely to find the note easier to understand.

Others aren’t convinced.

Instead, they believe Jolie simply has particularly difficult handwriting and that struggling to understand her message doesn’t necessarily say anything about someone’s ability to read cursive.

Either way, the dramatically different reactions show just how differently two people can interpret exactly the same piece of writing.

It’s also an unexpectedly mundane reason for Jolie to find herself at the centre of an online conversation.

Over the course of her career, the actress has attracted attention for everything from her films and humanitarian work to her appearances on the red carpet.

This time, however, all it took was a pen and a thank-you note written during a stay in Greece.

What was presumably intended as a private gesture of appreciation has now been seen by millions of people, with internet users effectively turning Jolie’s handwriting into an unofficial cursive-reading test.

And judging by the debate it has created, there still isn’t much agreement over just how difficult that test actually is.
