At first glance, the message begins conventionally enough.
“DO NOT CROSS THIS FIELD,” the sign reads.
But underneath comes the part that makes it memorable: “UNLESS YOU CAN DO IT IN 9 SECONDS BECAUSE THE BULL CAN DO IT IN 10”.
In other words, anyone choosing to ignore the warning had better possess a fairly impressive turn of pace.
The sign was shared on Reddit around four years ago by somebody who said a friend had photographed it during a trip to Fenit.
It later appeared in a LADbible Ireland video, captioned: “This is an actual sign in Ireland”, where viewers were equally amused by the farmer’s approach to keeping people out of the field.
One commenter who apparently recognised it wrote: “I love that sign I see it everytime I go for a walk.”
Another saw the warning as less of a deterrent and more of an invitation, joking: “… challenge accepted?”
Meanwhile, somebody responding to the video quipped: “That’s his last video, I guess?”
The original photograph makes the warning even harder to ignore, with cattle clearly visible grazing in the field behind it.
Whether anybody has actually attempted to test the farmer’s ten-second claim isn’t revealed in the posts.
But when the alternative involves finding out exactly how fast an angry bull can run, taking the long way around suddenly doesn’t sound too bad.
