Losing an arm after years of living with a serious injury is a huge adjustment. But for Joe, one incredibly personal gift from his cousin has given him something meaningful to wear following surgery — and a major confidence boost along the way.

Following the operation, his cousin Kevin decided to put his artistic skills to work and create something specifically for him.
The Louisville-based artist spent roughly 48 hours hand-crocheting an entire full-size arm.
And he didn’t stop at simply recreating its basic shape.
Kevin’s creation features individual fingers and removable anatomical elements, including blood and bone pieces, turning the arm into an elaborate piece of wearable fibre art.
Sharing the story on Reddit, Joe explained: “I recently lost my right arm at the elbow, and last night my cousin Kevin, who lives here in Louisville, surprised me with something I’ll never forget.
“He spent roughly 48 hours hand-crocheting me a full-size cosmetic arm, complete with individual fingers and removable blood, and bone pieces. It isn’t meant to function like a medical prosthetic, but being able to wear something soft, expressive, and made specifically for me gave me a huge confidence boost.”
The distinction is important. Kevin’s creation isn’t intended to replace a medical prosthesis or provide the functions of one.
Instead, he describes the piece as wearable fibre art, giving Joe a soft and expressive option made especially for him following his amputation.
Kevin isn’t exactly a newcomer to ambitious crochet projects, either.
According to Joe, his cousin has spent years making a variety of creations under the name ThunderStitch.
He added: “Kevin has been crocheting incredible creatures, puppets, costumes, and original characters for years under the name ThunderStitch.
“I honestly think Louisville has one hell of an artist hiding in plain sight, and I wanted our city to see what he made for me.”
The arm Kevin made for his cousin remains exactly that: a personal gift.
The original will never be sold, but Kevin has since begun accepting custom commissions through his ThunderStitch shop.

Yet the story behind Joe’s arm goes well beyond the time that went into crocheting it or what a commissioned version might cost.
After surgery brought a major physical change, Kevin created something that was never supposed to replicate the function of the arm Joe had lost.
Instead, those 48 hours of work produced something deliberately individual — a handmade piece Joe could wear, enjoy and connect with at a significant point in his life.
And judging by Joe’s own words, the effect of his cousin’s surprise was immediate: it gave him confidence when he needed it.
