The family of Avery Garcia, better known to hundreds of thousands of followers as Avery “The Poke Kid”, have shared his final Pokémon pack-opening video following his death at age 12.

Avery died on September 18 after an almost eight-year battle with pancreatoblastoma, a rare and aggressive form of pancreatic cancer most commonly diagnosed in children under 10.

Throughout his treatment, which included multiple surgeries and radiation treatments, Avery developed a huge online community through his passion for Pokémon.

He documented his cancer journey alongside videos opening Pokémon packs and showing off his collection, eventually attracting more than 600,000 followers across Instagram, YouTube, TikTok and Facebook.

Now, his family have shared one final pack opening.

In the emotional clip, Avery manages to pull a Jirachi SIR, describing the moment as “last pack magic” before delivering the familiar sign-off his followers had heard so many times before: “See you next time, trainers.”

The video has taken on added significance for the community who followed Avery’s journey, coming after his parents Christian Garcia and Rebecca Rosa-Valentin confirmed that their son had “passed away suddenly”.

Avery had recently entered hospice care for a third time, but his family believed they still had considerably more time together.

“Although Avery had recently transitioned to hospice care, we truly believed we still had months with our little man. Today, we brought him to the hospital for what we thought would be a routine visit,” they wrote. “We never imagined we would leave without him.”

As it became clear that Avery’s life was coming to an end, his parents took him to one of his favourite places at the hospital.

“When we realized our time with Avery was coming to an end, we brought him to one of his favorite places at the hospital, the rooftop garden,” they said. “We held our beautiful boy in our arms as a family. We kissed him. We told him how much we loved him. We told him how proud we were of him. And we stayed wrapped around him as he took his last breath.”

Shortly before his death, Avery also achieved one of his biggest ambitions.

He had dreamed of becoming a content creator and wanted to reach 100,000 subscribers on YouTube. Supporters rallied behind him and helped push his channel beyond the milestone, earning him the platform’s Silver Play Button.

His parents thanked the enormous community that had formed around their son throughout his treatment.

“Thank you for loving our little boy. Thank you for praying for him, cheering for him, watching his videos and giving him a community that brought him so much happiness,” they wrote.

Tributes have since poured in for Avery, who was also remembered for his generosity and for sharing Pokémon cards with other children undergoing treatment.

His parents ended their announcement with a fitting farewell to the boy whose love of Pokémon brought so many people together.

“Our handsome boy,” they wrote. “See you next time, Trainer.”
