A firefighter has gone beyond the call of duty after discovering how a 12-year-old boy spends his afternoons helping his mum run their family business.

Firefighter Miranda, who works in Montebello, met a youngster named Eduin and learned about the daily journey he makes after finishing school.

Rather than simply heading home at the end of the day, Eduin walks from school to his family’s taco stand in Los Angeles, where he gets straight to work alongside his mum.

Despite being just 12 years old, he plays an important role in keeping the family operation going.

Eduin helps cook the meat and serve customers at the stand, while also translating for his mum when needed.

But getting there every day wasn’t as straightforward as it could have been.

Eduin already owned a bicycle, but it was old and rusty. More importantly, he didn’t have a helmet or a light, meaning he wasn’t properly equipped to safely use the bike for his journey.

As a result, he continued making the trip from school on foot before getting to work helping his mum.

When Miranda heard about Eduin’s situation, he decided he wanted to make that daily routine a little easier.

The firefighter personally purchased the 12-year-old a brand-new bicycle, giving him a much quicker way to make the journey between school and the taco stand.

And he didn’t stop with the bike.

Knowing that Eduin’s old bicycle had been missing the equipment he needed to ride safely, Miranda also bought him a helmet and a light.

The gesture means Eduin can now ride from school while being properly equipped for the journey before joining his mum at the family business.

It might have been a relatively simple decision for Miranda, but it could make a significant difference to a youngster who spends his time outside school supporting his family.

The story was shared as an example of what community service can look like beyond responding to an emergency.

Firefighters are usually associated with arriving at the moment people need immediate help, but Miranda spotted an opportunity to assist someone in a completely different way.

There were no sirens involved and no emergency to respond to.

Instead, there was simply a 12-year-old making the walk from school every day so he could cook, serve customers and translate for his mum at their taco stand.

Now, thanks to one firefighter deciding to step in, that journey has become a whole lot easier — and safer.
