Netflix has officially announced that The Inbetweeners 3 is now in production in the UK, with Simon Bird, James Buckley, Blake Harrison and Joe Thomas all returning for another outing.

The four actors will reprise the roles that made them synonymous with one of Britain’s biggest coming-of-age comedies, with Bird returning as Will McKenzie, Buckley as Jay Cartwright, Harrison as Neil Sutherland and Thomas as Simon Cooper.

And if there were any doubts about whether the new film would embrace the chaotic spirit of what came before, its announcement trailer quickly puts them to rest. Check it out below:

The teaser begins with a garage door opening before several pairs of feet make their way towards a car.

That car is soon revealed to be a very familiar one: Simon’s yellow Fiat Cinquecento.

All four men eventually appear inside, but the reunion with Simon’s beloved motor doesn’t exactly go according to plan.

When the car initially refuses to start, Simon responds in his typically frustrated fashion: “Ah, for f**k’s sake.”

Eventually, he manages to get the engine going and drives out of the garage.

There is one particularly important addition to the vehicle, however, with the number three displayed prominently on its rear windscreen. The trailer then delivers the confirmation fans have been waiting for: “Now in production.”

The new feature film will continue the story that originally began on television almost two decades ago.

The Inbetweeners was broadcast on Channel 4 between 2008 and 2010, following suburban teenager Will and his friends Simon, Neil and Jay as they attempted to survive life at the fictional Rudge Park Comprehensive.

School, friendship and their consistently disastrous sexual encounters formed the backdrop to the series, which ran for three series and set new ratings records for the channel while also winning multiple awards.

Its popularity proved strong enough to take the four friends beyond Rudge Park and onto the big screen.

The first Inbetweeners film arrived in 2011 and saw the group head to Crete in Greece for a post-sixth form holiday.

It became an enormous box-office success, grossing £65.1 million and going straight to number one.

According to Netflix, the film also made history by recording the biggest opening weekend for a UK comedy at the time of its release.

That success was followed by a second movie in 2014.

This time, Will, Simon and Neil travelled to Australia to visit Jay during his gap year, with the sequel going on to gross £46.6 million and also breaking box-office records.

Now, more than a decade after the second movie, the four central characters are officially being reunited for a third feature film.

Crucially, the people responsible for creating The Inbetweeners are also returning.

Damon Beesley and Iain Morris will write and direct The Inbetweeners 3, putting the original creators back in control of the latest chapter.

Beesley and Morris said, per Netflix’s official site: “It’s been super-fun hanging out with our friends again, and we’re going to work hard every week to ensure there are no problemos making this new film for humans.”

Netflix has also confirmed the team working behind the scenes on the production.

Claire Jones will produce the film alongside Banijay’s Patrick Holland and Fudge Park Production’s Mark Lesbirel. Caroline Levy, Caroline Leddy, Phil Gilbert (no, not that one), Suzanne Knight, Tom Jordan, Farhana Bhula, Morris and Beesley will serve as executive producers.

While the return of the central foursome has been confirmed, questions remain over which other familiar faces could appear alongside them.

It is currently unknown whether Emily Atack will return as Charlotte Hinchcliffe or whether Emily Head will reprise her role as Carli D’Amato.

Nevertheless, if you’re like me – a 34-year-old who went through his high school years watching Inbetweeners on repeat and quoting the series like I had a pull-string – the news will undoubtedly make you feel like you’re back on the pull in the greatest/worst years of your life.
