Giving your maid of honour complete freedom over what she wears sounds like a wonderfully relaxed approach to a wedding.

It also opens the door to the possibility of a Tyrannosaurus rex joining you at the altar.

That is exactly what happened when Nebraska bride Deanna Adams told her younger sister Christina Meador she could wear whatever she wanted to the ceremony.

Christina, 38, from Texas, decided to test just how serious that offer was by turning up in an enormous inflatable T-Rex costume.

The unforgettable moment happened at Deanna’s wedding on August 10, with Christina later sharing a picture on Facebook alongside the caption: “When you’re maid of honour and told you can wear anything you choose… I regret nothing.”

It subsequently went viral, racking up more than 34,000 shares and 17,000 comments before receiving further attention on Reddit.

However, Deanna wasn’t exactly blindsided by the prehistoric addition to her wedding party.

Christina explained to the Daily Mail: “About a year ago my big sister texted me asking if I would be her maid of honour.”

She said her sister knew she wasn’t particularly keen on formal dresses and gave her permission to choose her own outfit.

Christina recalled: “I was trying to think of something that I would be willing to wear more than once and thought to myself, “Well, she did say anything, and if I’m spending more than $50, I want it to be a dinosaur costume, because they’re fantastic and I’ve always wanted one.

“I sent her a text so that she could have a laugh – surprisingly she was ok with it!”

The idea wasn’t immediately set in stone. Christina floated other unconventional possibilities in the months before the wedding, including dressing as a Tardis from Doctor Who.

Money initially looked like it might kill off the dinosaur plan, with Christina instead finding a $7 thrift-store dress.

But after losing weight before the wedding, that dress became too big.

Christina eventually bought the T-Rex costume and also picked up a $20 dress as a backup, repeatedly giving Deanna opportunities to tell her to abandon the dinosaur idea.

The bride refused to blink.

Christina therefore accompanied her sister down the aisle dressed as a giant inflatable dinosaur.

“It was hot!” she recalled. “I remember being surprised that everyone seemed to be doing their best to avoid noticing the elephant in the room (or should I say dino) but it was hard to see in the costume.

“I peeled off the costume as soon as the ceremony was over to enjoy the reception in the dress I wore underneath it.”

Remarkably, the wedding wasn’t even the only T-Rex sighting in the neighbourhood that day.

“Funny side story – about 15 minutes into the reception, someone was looking for me and said they saw me walking around the neighbourhood with a boy.

“But it wasn’t me, it was a kid and his friend who was just cruising the neighbourhood in another T-Rex costume!”

While the viral picture attracted some criticism, Deanna made it clear that she had no problem with her sister’s choice.

“The point was to get married to the man who treats me like I hung the moon, and we did that part.”

She added: “My sister is awesome and I genuinely was not kidding when I said she could wear whatever she wanted.”
