A single mum went to extraordinary lengths to make sure her 12-year-old son didn’t miss out on a school event designed for dads and their children.

Yevette Vazquez, from Fort Worth, Texas, had been dropping her son Elijah off at school when she noticed something unusual.

There were far more cars parked outside than she would normally expect during the school run, prompting her to ask Elijah what was happening.

“I ask him why there was so many cars,” Vazquez wrote in a Facebook post that would later be shared thousands of times, “He said Donuts with Dad”.

The school was holding an event celebrating father-child bonding, but as a single parent, Vazquez immediately realised it could mean Elijah being left on the sidelines while other children attended alongside their dads.

So she came up with a solution.

Rather than simply continuing with the school run, Vazquez and Elijah headed back home so she could completely transform her appearance and attend the event as his dad.

She put on a checked shirt, hid her hair beneath a cap and even added stick-on facial hair to complete the look.

Elijah apparently wasn’t embarrassed by his mum’s transformation either. In fact, he got involved by spraying her with cologne as she prepared for the event.

For Vazquez, however, the costume was about far more than getting a laugh.

“I know seeing other dads with their kids isn’t easy for mine but it’s life, at least I can do whatever it takes to put a smile on that face,” wrote Vazquez in the post.

And judging by Elijah’s reaction, her plan worked.

The story quickly struck a chord online, with Vazquez’s Facebook post receiving more than 18,000 reactions and being shared more than 6,000 times.

Her post included the tags #ilovehim, #wegettingthemdonuts and #noexcuses, while people flooded the comments with praise for the mum’s efforts.

Ceci Solis wrote: “Omg tears r coming down my face”.

She added: “It’s hard not having a dad and for u to do that it’s just amazing”.

Another user, Mozar E Lucy DePaula, commented: “You are an amazing mom, I was a single mom and I know what take for us to do anything to see a smile in our kids face. You are the best and keep up. God bless you and you son”.

Others suggested Vazquez deserved to be named “Mother of the Year”, while Kookie So’Nawleans perhaps delivered the most fitting response to the donut-themed occasion: “U deserve a million doughnuts”.

The reaction didn’t stop there.

In a follow-up post, Vazquez revealed she had received messages from “people in New York all the way to Egypt” following the story’s spread online.

After seeing the response to what she had done for Elijah, Vazquez said her “heart was full” with the messages of support.
