There are few things more wholesome than a grandad posing for photos with his beloved cats in some of Japan’s most beautiful surroundings.

Unfortunately, nobody appears to have told the cats they’re supposed to be posing.

An elderly Japanese man has gone viral thanks to his brilliantly chaotic photoshoots with his two cats, Shushu and Miko, who seemingly have a habit of turning picturesque family photos into a battleground.

The grandad regularly appears alongside the pair on the Instagram account @catwolf0314, which has amassed more than 160,000 followers.

And it’s not difficult to understand why.

His photos typically follow the same charming formula: grandad smiling happily at the camera, surrounded by stunning landscapes and colourful fields of flowers, while holding his cats.

The only problem is what happens when Shushu and Miko find themselves next to each other.

Instead of calmly looking towards the camera, the pair can be seen fighting and hissing while their owner continues smiling through the chaos.

It makes for quite the contrast.

Shushu, a white cat with a black tail, is the senior member of the duo. Born in 2016, Shushu arrived at the family home in 2021.

Miko is considerably younger. The tabby was born in September 2024 before joining the family in December of the same year.

Despite the comedy created by their photoshoots, there is also a touching reason behind the grandad’s tradition.

According to Eastweek, the pictures are taken in tribute to the family’s former cat, Wolf, who died in 2020.

The elderly man now travels around Japan taking photographs with his new cats as a way of remembering Wolf.

It’s a sentimental tradition that has unexpectedly produced some hilarious results, with the combination of spectacular scenery, grandad’s enormous smile and two cats scrapping in his arms capturing plenty of attention online.

One post shared on 17 August had received more than 563,000 likes at the time of writing.

Perhaps the funniest part of the entire situation is that Shushu and Miko apparently aren’t sworn enemies at all.

Other pictures posted to the Instagram account show the pair happily relaxing alongside one another in the same basket, suggesting they are perfectly capable of enjoying each other’s company when there isn’t a camera involved.

But put them together on grandad’s lap for another wholesome photograph and apparently all bets are off.

For the man behind the photos, that doesn’t appear to be enough to abandon the tradition.

He continues taking dozens of pictures with his cats every week, meaning Shushu and Miko are likely to have plenty more opportunities to produce the perfect family photo.

Whether they’ll actually cooperate is another matter entirely.
