Glasgow has once again been transformed into Gotham City for the upcoming Batman movie – but locals are reportedly trying to make sure a very Scottish detail survives the journey onto the big screen.

Filming for The Batman: Part II is taking place in the city, with Bothwell Street being used to recreate the fictional home of the Caped Crusader.

And while the production has brought Gotham police vehicles, a SWAT team, fake snow and the Batmobile onto Glasgow’s streets, some fans have apparently decided the set is missing one crucial prop: Irn-Bru.

According to a claim shared on social media, locals have repeatedly been leaving cans of the famous orange drink around the set in the hope that one might somehow make it into a shot.

The Sun reports that attempts have reportedly become frequent enough that security staff are checking the set each night and removing any cans they find.

One person who visited the production claimed they were told about the unusual problem by a member of security.

They wrote: “Went to The Batman 2 set in Glasgow and one of the security people said that they have to search the set for Irn-Bru cans every night because the locals are trying to sneak one into the film and they keep popping up in the bins and hot dog stands lmao.”

The cans have allegedly been left in places including bins and hot dog stands, The Sun reports.

And social media users are loving the cheeky antics of the Scots – with one person writing: “This is what makes #Glasgow. Can’t wait for the movie to come out now to see if they manage to do it. ‘mon the bru!”

A second added: “Make The Batman drink a can of irn bru as cannon you cowards.”

Whether anyone will actually succeed in getting one past the security checks remains to be seen, but fans have plenty of opportunities to get a look at the Gotham transformation for themselves.

Much of Bothwell Street remains accessible during the daytime, allowing people to visit the area and take pictures with some of the vehicles being used during filming.

Once the cameras start rolling, however, the Glasgow street has been hosting considerably more dramatic scenes.

A major Batmobile sequence has been filmed across several nights, involving a police pursuit through the city centre.

The famous vehicle has also been seen performing doughnuts while surrounded by Gotham City police cars and motorcycles.

Another part of the action has involved a SWAT team in armoured vehicles firing automatic rifles at the Batmobile.

The production has gone beyond bringing in fictional emergency vehicles, too.

Fake frost and snow have been added to streets and pavements, helping turn Glasgow into a wintry version of Gotham for the sequel.

Robert Pattinson is set to return as Batman for his second outing as the character, with filming in Glasgow expected to continue over the coming weeks.

It is hardly unfamiliar territory for the franchise.

Glasgow was previously used for scenes in Pattinson’s first Batman film and this marks the third time the Scottish city has appeared as Gotham City.

Pattinson himself has previously spoken about why he believes Glasgow is such a natural fit for Batman’s world.

“It’s not at all surprising to me that Glasgow has become a sort of unofficial Gotham City.”

He continued: “When you think of Gotham you think of a wonderfully Gothic city – and that’s why Glasgow works so well.

“The architecture in Glasgow is incredible – it has that real 19th century feel to it hence why it makes for a brilliant Gotham.”

The upcoming film also has a major cast attached.

Colin Farrell is set to appear as the Penguin, while Scarlett Johansson and Sebastian Stan are also part of the line-up.

Barry Keoghan, who appeared as the Joker in Pattinson’s first Batman film, is expected to reprise the role.

For Glasgow residents watching another huge Hollywood production take over their city, however, it seems simply providing the architecture isn’t enough for everyone.

If the reports are accurate, some locals are determined to leave their own unmistakably Scottish mark on Gotham.
