A woman who was given just days to live as a baby is preparing to marry the brother of the boy whose organ donation saved her life.

Brooklyn Dotson was only a few months old in 2003 when she was diagnosed with a rare liver condition.

Her situation was so serious that doctors estimated she had just three days left to live, with her family being told to begin preparing for the worst.

Speaking to LEX 18 News, Dotson recalled: “They told my mom to go ahead and call the funeral home and make my arrangements.”

Her mother refused to give up hope.

Then, with time running out, a donor liver became available following the tragic death of 10-year-old Michael Waters.

Michael, from Dayton, Ohio, died after being hit by a car.

Despite his young age, he had previously made his wish to become an organ donor clear, and his parents chose to honour that decision.

Michael was remembered as “a sweet kid” who would “do anything for anybody,” and his donations went on to help a number of people.

His limbs, heart, eyes, lungs and kidneys were donated to transplant patients, while his liver was given to Dotson.

She underwent the life-saving procedure at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, giving her a second chance when her family had been facing the prospect of losing her.

But the transplant would ultimately connect the two families in another extraordinary way.

Dotson became friends with Michael’s brother, Noah Waters, following her surgery.

As the pair grew older, that friendship eventually developed into a relationship. They began dating and later got engaged, with their wedding scheduled for September 26.

“Their lives were connected from that moment,” the couple’s wedding website reads.

For Michael’s family, the relationship has taken on an especially poignant meaning.

Noah’s cousin Beth Poteet told LEX 18 News: “I look now and I think God always has a plan, and it was for them to be together to carry on our family’s legacy through Michael.”

She added: “I believe that Michael probably had a little hand in helping them get together as well.”

Noah has also reflected on the remarkable chain of events that began with his brother’s decision to become an organ donor.

“I’d say he probably knew what his purpose was. I had no idea that my brother was gonna save my wife’s life 20 years later.”

Now 24, Dotson is preparing not only to marry Noah but also to take the surname of the boy whose liver allowed her to grow up and experience the life she very nearly lost as a baby.

For the bride-to-be, it provides another way of keeping Michael’s memory alive.

“I get to enjoy life because of him and I get to live and hopefully honor his memory the best way that I can,” she said.
