There are plenty of reasons to regret leaving your takeaway sitting on the kitchen table overnight.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!Having a bear break into your house, smash a thick glass table and make off with your leftover KFC is probably not one most people have considered.
But that was the extraordinary situation Kendra North found herself dealing with after a bear entered her Kentucky home in the early hours of August 13.
Perhaps even more remarkably, North managed to sleep through the entire thing.
It was instead her sister, who lives next door, who realised something was seriously wrong at around 5:00AM.
“My sister started calling me, like, five in the morning, and I declined her at least twice, and she just kept calling,” North told Fox 56 News.
Eventually, North answered.
The message waiting for her was not exactly the sort of update you expect from your sister before sunrise.
“I answered the call, and she was like, ‘Bro, there’s a bear, and it just walked out of your house, and it came down your steps. It came and looked at me, dead in the eyes, on my side of the yard,’” she said.
While North hadn’t heard the intruder herself, there was plenty of evidence left behind.
The bear’s visit had resulted in a substantial piece of furniture being destroyed, with North’s thick glass table completely shattered.
She believes the damage suggests she had been visited by a sizeable animal.
“My table is really thick glass, and it completely shattered it. She said she actually heard the table shattered from inside her house, and she thought that it was a car wreck outside.”
North’s sister hearing the impact from another property makes her sleeping through the incident all the more remarkable.
But once the immediate shock of discovering a bear had wandered through her home had subsided, another important question remained: why had it decided to come inside in the first place?
North had a fairly obvious suspect.
There had been leftover food sitting out on her table, including KFC, which she believes may have provided the bear with the incentive it needed to investigate.
And amid the shattered furniture and slightly alarming realisation that a wild animal had been wandering around her home while she slept, North managed to find the funny side of losing her meal.
“I’m a little sad over my KFC,” North said (and in all honesty, we can totally relate).
Her experience also provided a rather dramatic example of why leaving accessible food around a property can become an issue in areas where bears are present.
Kentucky Fish and Wildlife Bear Program Coordinator John Hast explained that residents can take relatively straightforward measures to make their homes and surrounding areas less attractive to the animals.
That doesn’t just mean thinking about human food.
Pet food can also provide an easy meal, particularly when it is stored or left outside.
“If you store pet food or if you feed your dogs outside, just think about that. Make sure you’re not leaving any out on the porch, and that’ll keep the bear from just coming right in and getting an easy meal,” Hast said.
Bins and rubbish are another potential source of food that residents are advised to consider when bears have been spotted close to their homes.
“If you’ve got reports right there close to the house, just think about where your garbage is,” he said.
“Definitely don’t leave your leftover KFC on the kitchen table and make sure the door is shut very well,” she added.
Fortunately, North has not only shared footage of the destruction to social media, but she’s also clearly seen the funny side of it all:
