For most people, crowd surfing at a heavy metal festival means throwing yourself into the unknown and trusting hundreds of strangers to keep you in the air.

The then-19-year-old law student became the centre of an unforgettable moment at Resurrection Fest in north-western Spain when fellow festival-goers lifted him and his wheelchair above their heads during Arch Enemy’s set, per the Daily Mail.
With dozens of hands supporting him, Alex was carried high above the crowd while raising his arms into the air.
It was something he had wanted to experience for a long time.
And when the opportunity finally arrived, the reality seemingly surpassed everything he had imagined.
“It was a rush of energy, adrenaline, excitement, joy, happiness. A dream come true I had this idea for a long time to see my favorite groups from up there,” he told the Huffington Post. “You feel as if you were God.”
Alex, who has cerebral palsy, was attending the heavy metal festival in Vivero, Galicia, when the crowd helped turn that ambition into reality.
The remarkable scenes quickly travelled far beyond the festival itself.
Images of Alex sitting in his wheelchair above a sea of people went viral on social media and appeared in news coverage around the world, with the moment celebrated as a striking example of inclusiveness.
One of the most memorable photographs was captured by event photographer Daniel Cruz.
Cruz spotted what was happening and knew immediately that he needed to document it.
“I got on the fence running and I saw that the people were carrying Alex, it was an immediate reaction, to take the camera and take the picture,” he told LaSexta.
His photograph would go on to be labelled the photo of the summer, while other people who had witnessed the moment began sharing their own pictures online.
But those standing in the crowd weren’t the only ones who noticed what was happening.
Arch Enemy had a completely different view from the stage.
The Swedish band captured footage of Alex being carried above the audience and later shared a video of the moment, describing the gesture as “incredible” and praising their “awesome” fans.
“The Arch Enemy legions just being awesome as usual at @ResurrectionESP in Spain a couple of days ago,” the band tweeted.
Behind the viral photographs was a trip that meant a huge amount to Alex.
He is a fan of rock and heavy metal, although his musical interests extend across different genres.
His mother, Belén, explained that attending the concert had been a dream for her son.
Alex had taken responsibility for organising the trip himself, including booking the hotel and preparing everything he needed to be at the festival.
And after finally getting there — and experiencing the concert from a perspective few could have anticipated — he was already looking ahead to attending another.
His mother also made clear that Alex had never been someone willing to sit on the sidelines.
