By that measure, Pearl might be one of the most naturally gifted security guards around.
There is just one slight difference: Pearl is a cat.
The grumpy-looking feline from Thailand has attracted attention online thanks to the extremely important role he performs around his owner’s watermelons, per BoredPanda.
And judging by the expression permanently plastered across his face, this is not a responsibility he takes lightly.
Pearl’s owner works as a watermelon seller, with the cat apparently deciding that somebody needs to keep a watchful eye over the precious fruit.
That somebody is Pearl.
He has reportedly been guarding the watermelon farm for almost six years, becoming an experienced feline supervisor in the process.
Forget complicated security systems or intimidating personnel. Sometimes all you apparently need is one cat sitting next to a pile of watermelons looking deeply suspicious of everybody who comes near them.
Pearl’s greatest weapon isn’t particularly sophisticated, either.
It’s his stare.
Pictures of the cat show him positioned among the watermelons with an expression capable of making prospective customers wonder whether they really need one after all.
Before getting your hands on a watermelon, it seems you first have to pass inspection from Pearl.
The feline has effectively become a little guard-cat, keeping watch while wearing the sort of expression that suggests unauthorised watermelon consumption will absolutely not be tolerated.
It’s an image perfectly suited to the internet’s long-running fascination with cats who look permanently unimpressed with the world around them.
Pearl certainly fits that description.
His glaring stare makes him appear considerably more intimidating than the average pet, particularly when he’s stationed next to the produce as though he’s personally responsible for making sure every watermelon is accounted for.
But appearances can be deceiving.
Despite Pearl looking like the sort of security guard who would immediately escort you from the premises for even thinking about touching something without permission, his owner says his personality is very different from what those pictures suggest.
Behind the formidable expression is apparently an incredibly sweet cat.
So while Pearl might look as though he’s prepared to defend those watermelons at all costs, the reality is rather less frightening.
That contrast is a large part of what makes him so entertaining.
