John Goodman has spent decades as one of the most recognisable faces on television and in Hollywood, but a recent photo of the veteran actor has left fans seeing him in an entirely different light.

The 74-year-old appeared noticeably slimmer after crossing paths with Wizards of Waverly Place actor David DeLuise inside a grocery store.

DeLuise, 54, shared a photo of the pair together on Instagram on Thursday, August 6, with Goodman’s transformation immediately standing out.

“He was my childhood!! Legend!” DeLuise captioned the post. “I love that I get to say that to someone ;), if you know you know.”

While the latest picture has brought renewed attention to Goodman’s appearance, his transformation is anything but an overnight change.

The Roseanne star has been committed to improving his health for years, eventually losing more than 100lbs after making significant changes to his lifestyle.

Back in 2010, Goodman revealed that he had cut sugar from his diet and was exercising six days a week as part of his efforts to get healthier.

Rather than throwing himself into extreme workouts, however, the actor explained that he had found a sustainable approach to exercise.

“I’m breaking a sweat, but I’m not going nuts,” the actor, who was then in his late 50s, told PEOPLE.

It represented a major shift for Goodman, who spoke openly that same year about just how much his weight had fluctuated previously.

During an appearance on Late Night with David Letterman, he revealed that he had been “pushing 400” lbs at his heaviest.

Goodman explained that losing weight itself hadn’t always been the problem. Keeping it off was the challenge.

“I’d get off of Roseanne — every spring. I’d lose 60 pounds every spring,” he told Letterman, per TV Guide. “And then I got too fond of the barley corn,” he added, explaining that he would subsequently gain the weight back “and some.”

A particularly important moment in Goodman’s wider lifestyle transformation had already arrived three years earlier.

He quit drinking in 2007 following what became a major wake-up call.

According to an account of his decision, Goodman had woken up shaking after a heavy weekend of drinking with friends and subsequently checked himself into a treatment centre.

He has since been candid about reaching the point where he knew something needed to change.

“I just got tired, sick and tired of looking at myself. You’re shaving in the mirror, and you don’t want to look at yourself. It gets dangerous,” he said, per News.com.au. “I wanted to live life better.”

That decision ultimately became part of a much broader change in how Goodman approached his health.

His more than 100lb weight loss has therefore come alongside changes to his diet, regular exercise and his decision to stop drinking.

And almost two decades after quitting alcohol, Goodman is still openly discussing how sobriety has changed even some of the smaller routines in his life.

During a July 8 Instagram video for London restaurant Simpson’s in the Strand, which is owned by his friend Jeremy King, Goodman revealed that he had even stopped grilling.

“I don’t grill anymore because I don’t drink anymore,” the Flintstones star said.

For Goodman, the two activities had previously gone hand-in-hand, with the actor joking that grilling “was a good excuse to get drunk — stand in front of something hot.”

Just like DeLuise, Goodman played a huge role in our childhoods – thanks to roles in iconic movies like The Borrowers, Monsters Inc, and The Flintstones. So seeing him look so happy and healthy obviously delighted other Instagram users.

“John Goodman is a living legend,” one person commented, with a second adding: “Wow! Same here love him in The Flintstones too.”

“Awesome,” wrote a third, and a fourth typed: “So cool! I love him!!!”
