For the past two years, one young boy has been making a remarkable difference at his local animal shelter—not with donations or fundraising, but simply by sitting down with a book.

Eleven-year-old Nehemiah Turner has become a familiar face at the Jacksonville Humane Society (JHS) in Florida after dedicating countless hours to reading to adoptable animals through the shelter’s Pawsitive Reading program. His commitment has now earned him a milestone no other child has achieved before, becoming the first young participant to reach an incredible 100 hours of reading.

The achievement marks the culmination of a goal Nehemiah has been working towards ever since joining the Pawsitive Reading program in 2024. Supported throughout by his grandmother, he returned to the shelter week after week, sharing stories with the dogs and other animals waiting to find permanent homes.

Speaking to local outlet Action News Jax, Nehemiah explained why he enjoys spending time reading alongside the shelter’s residents.

“[It’s] soothing, feels good, calm. [They’re] comforted animals, not like a whole bunch of barking is happening,” Nehemiah said.

His accomplishment was celebrated by Jacksonville Humane Society, which highlighted the dedication behind his 100-hour journey in a Facebook post announcing the milestone.

“Pawsitive Readers have the opportunity to earn colored paw print stickers for their name badges as they reach reading hour milestones, with a sparkly gold paw print sticker being the coveted grand prize,” the shelter wrote. “Nehemiah also earned a certificate verifying his 100 hours of reading, signed in gold ink.”

The shelter also shared photographs documenting the occasion, showing Nehemiah reading The Tyrell Show while sitting outside one dog’s living space, along with other images of him enjoying another book and proudly posing with the certificate recognising his volunteer service.

While the programme allows children to practise reading in a calm environment, it also provides valuable companionship for the shelter animals. For Nehemiah, the dogs have always been the highlight of his visits.

According to Jacksonville Humane Society, he said he most enjoys reading to the dogs and hopes the time he spends with them helps them stay calm while increasing their chances of finding loving forever homes.

One dog, in particular, left a lasting impression on the young volunteer.

“One of his favorite dogs to read to was Hopper, who he read to during every visit until he was adopted after nearly 400 days in the shelter,” JHS’s Facebook post adds.

Nehemiah’s consistency and compassion have resonated far beyond the walls of the shelter, with Jacksonville Humane Society CEO Lawrence Nicolas praising the young reader for inspiring those around him.

“Nehemiah’s story perfectly embodies our core belief at the Jacksonville Humane Society that generosity breeds joy,” Nicolas said in a statement. “In a world where we’ve become increasingly reliant on screens, here is a young man who quietly set a goal to help homeless animals by reading books and, in doing so, has inspired his entire community.”

The CEO also emphasised the wider impact volunteers like Nehemiah have on the organisation’s mission.

“We are deeply proud of Nehemiah and grateful for the impact that he and all of our participants in the Pawsitive Reading program have on our lifesaving mission,” Nicolas added.

Although the 100-hour milestone is a remarkable achievement in itself, Nehemiah’s story is ultimately about much more than numbers. Over two years, he has shown unwavering commitment to helping animals simply by sharing his time, patience and love of reading.
