The latest Spider-Man adventure starring Tom Holland officially grossed an astonishing $360 million across North America during its opening weekend, surpassing the $357 million domestic debut achieved by Avengers: Endgame in 2019, per The Hollywood Reporter and Forbes.
The final total also exceeded Sunday projections, with early estimates placing the film at around $355 million before revised figures pushed it even higher.
The historic performance means Brand New Day now owns the biggest domestic opening weekend in box office history.
Its success wasn’t limited to North America either.
International audiences turned out in huge numbers, contributing a further $573 million, taking the film’s worldwide opening to approximately $932 million after just a single weekend in cinemas.
That figure ranks as the second-biggest global opening ever, trailing only Avengers: Endgame, which launched with around $1.22 billion worldwide.
The scale of the debut has stunned industry analysts after significantly outperforming expectations.
Only days before release, Boxoffice Pro had forecast an opening between $280 million and $300 million, describing that prediction as “bullish”. Instead, the film exceeded even the most optimistic forecasts by a remarkable margin.
The record-breaking weekend continues a remarkable trend for Tom Holland’s version of Peter Parker, with every standalone Spider-Man film increasing its commercial success.
His first solo outing, Spider-Man: Homecoming, opened to $117 million domestically before earning $880 million worldwide.
Spider-Man: Far From Home followed with a $92 million domestic opening before finishing with $1.13 billion globally.
Then came Spider-Man: No Way Home, which exploded with a $260 million domestic launch and ultimately reached an incredible $1.9 billion worldwide.
Now, Brand New Day has comfortably surpassed them all during its opening weekend alone.
The latest instalment had already begun rewriting the record books before the weekend was complete.
It previously secured the biggest opening day in box office history after earning approximately $168 million on Friday, overtaking another record previously held by Avengers: Endgame.
Saturday remained just shy of another all-time benchmark, bringing in around $101.5 million, behind Endgame‘s Saturday record of $109.2 million.
According to additional reports, the film also established the largest preview haul ever with $72 million, alongside the biggest opening day total of $169.8 million.
Its opening weekend has also become the largest in Sony Pictures’ history.
Marvel Studios can now also lay claim to the four biggest worldwide opening weekends ever recorded, with Avengers: Endgame remaining first globally, followed by Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Spider-Man: No Way Home and Avengers: Infinity War.
The latest adventure sees Holland reunite with director Destin Daniel Cretton.
Picking up after the events of No Way Home, the story follows Peter Parker after the entire world has forgotten who he is.
While continuing to protect New York City from a mysterious new threat, Spider-Man is also forced to deal with life without MJ (Zendaya) and best friend Ned (Jacob Batalon), neither of whom remember him, while struggling to control his increasingly mutating powers.
Audiences and critics appear to have embraced the latest chapter.
The film currently holds a 90% critics’ score and an impressive 98% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, while CinemaScore audiences awarded it an “A” grade following screenings.
Sony Pictures chairman Tom Rothman celebrated the achievement following confirmation that the film had overtaken Endgame‘s domestic opening record.
“Wow! 360 million thank-yous to all the filmmakers, actors, producers, and to my colleagues at Sony, who created such a fantastic film and an exceptional marketing and distribution campaign,” says Tom Rothman, chairman of Sony Pictures. “Records are made to be broken, but we will take great pride in this one, for as long as we hold it.”
The phenomenal response also comes with little competition at the multiplex, giving Brand New Day a clear path through the remainder of the summer.
Reports suggest the combination of overwhelmingly positive word-of-mouth and repeat viewings could see the superhero blockbuster comfortably surpass $2 billion worldwide, a feat achieved by only seven films in cinema history.
While Spider-Man dominated headlines, Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey continued to perform strongly in its third weekend, earning an estimated $51 million to finish second at the domestic box office.
The result also creates an unusual milestone for Tom Holland and his spouse and co-star Zendaya, who both feature prominently in the two highest-grossing films currently playing in cinemas.
The strength of both releases helped produce another remarkable industry record.
According to Variety, moviegoers spent at least $425 million at the domestic box office over the weekend thanks largely to Spider-Man: Brand New Day and The Odyssey, making it the highest-grossing weekend in domestic box office history.
Only two films have ever crossed the $300 million mark during a single domestic opening weekend—Avengers: Endgame and now Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
The gap between those two films and every other release is equally striking. The third and fourth biggest domestic openings belong to Spider-Man: No Way Home ($260 million) and Avengers: Infinity War ($257 million), meaning Marvel Studios now occupies all four spots on the all-time list.
For Tom Holland, whose Spider-Man journey has consistently grown with each release, this latest success is another landmark moment in an already remarkable run.
After a weekend that has shattered records once thought untouchable, Peter Parker has officially climbed to the very top of the box office.
