The incident unfolded shortly after the singer took to the stage at New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium ahead of Sunday’s World Cup final between Spain and Argentina.

Williams, dressed in a sparkling blue tracksuit, performed alongside Nicole Scherzinger and Laura Pausini as part of the tournament’s closing ceremony before appearing on German broadcaster Magenta Sport.

It was during that interview that eagle-eyed viewers noticed something unusual.

As Williams answered questions from the pundits, a small white object appeared to fall onto his microphone before he instinctively flicked it away.

The singer then rubbed his forehead, where the object briefly stuck, creating a bizarre sequence that was quickly clipped and shared across social media.

The unusual footage prompted immediate speculation online, with some viewers initially suggesting the object had fallen from Williams’ nose. Others, however, argued that slow-motion replays appeared to tell a different story.

“Slowed it right down. It came from his mouth,” one X user claimed.

Regardless of where it originated, the clip quickly went viral, with social media users debating exactly what had happened during the live broadcast.

One person joked: “Poor Robbie Williams. Had a stinker on live German TV.”

Rather than ignore the growing conversation, Williams decided to address it himself the following day.

Posting a video to Instagram while lying in bed, the former Take That star poked fun at the incident rather than offering a serious defence.

He began by saying: “I’d just like to apologise for the object that fell onto the microphone yesterday.

“I was deeply unprofessional, and people worried about me.”

After a brief pause, he delivered the punchline: “But it’s OK. Because I had several more.”

Williams then stuck out his tongue to reveal two small white mints before bursting into laughter as the video abruptly ended.

He accompanied the clip with the caption: “Just woke up and feeling…. Mint x.”

The playful response immediately won over many fans, who praised the singer for laughing at himself instead of shying away from the attention.

One follower commented: “Brilliant bloody love you!”

Another wrote: “Knew you’d have a brill comeback for this.”

A third simply added: “Made my day.”

The viral moment came during a busy evening for Williams, who had already performed as part of FIFA’s first-ever World Cup half-time show.

The expanded spectacle lasted around 11 minutes and featured a host of international stars including Madonna, Shakira, Justin Bieber and BTS, while Muppets favourites Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy also made appearances.

To accommodate the performance, FIFA extended the traditional 15-minute half-time interval to more than 27 minutes.

While the show delivered plenty of star power, it also divided opinion among football fans, with some arguing it represented another step towards the commercialisation of the World Cup.

Former England striker Wayne Rooney was among those who wasn’t particularly impressed.

Working as a BBC pundit alongside Joe Hart and Micah Richards, Rooney was asked by presenter Gabby Logan for his highlight of the half-time entertainment.

His response was brutally honest.

“I’ll be honest, mine was when it finished. I like a lot of them artists but I thought it was crap,” he said. “It just didn’t get me going and I wanted the football to come back on. I like Burna Boy, I like Bieber, I like Shakira, but that was too flat.”
