What you probably don’t expect is a decade-old photograph of your own family hanging on the wall.
Yet that is exactly what one family claims happened after arriving at an Airbnb in San Diego and taking a closer look at a large framed beach picture inside the property.
TikTok poster Aubrey Birrell shared the family’s bizarre discovery online, describing the moment they began to realise the people featured in the photograph looked extremely familiar.
At first, it was Aubrey’s dad who spotted something unusual.
“Random Airbnb, no connections to it. We’re looking at this picture, and my dad is like, ‘This looks like me,’” she says in the video.
That alone would have been enough to make most people stare at the wall for a little longer.
But the more the family studied the image, the stranger things became.
What initially appeared to be a random beach photograph suddenly started looking less random as they picked out more people in the frame.
“No, this is my dad. That’s my sister, Libby, from 10 years ago, and that’s Brady, my brother, 10 years ago,” Aubrey added.
Her sister Libby then appeared equally convinced by what they were seeing.
“We have those swimsuits. We are literally in this picture.”
According to the family, the photograph appears to date back around 10 years and shows them during a trip to the beach.
However, there is one major detail which could help explain why nobody recognised the actual photograph itself.
The image appears to have been taken from above.
That means the family may never have known the picture existed in the first place, only to walk into an Airbnb roughly a decade later and apparently find a huge framed version of it displayed on the wall.
It’s the sort of coincidence that would have most people immediately demanding to know the full history of every picture in the property.
Unsurprisingly, TikTok users were equally baffled by the discovery.
Aubrey’s video has attracted more than 800,000 views on TikTok alone, with viewers attempting to process just how unlikely the situation appeared to be.
For some, the entire thing had the atmosphere of a film where the main characters should probably leave the house immediately.
“Literally sounds like the start of a horror movie,” said one reply.
Another viewer managed to make the situation feel even more unsettling by pointing out the wider implications of the photograph apparently ending up in an Airbnb.
“That means you’re on a lot more walls than you realize.”
It’s a fair point.
If a candid beach photograph can somehow travel from an unknown camera to a large frame inside a rental property years later, there’s really no telling where else an image might end up.
Other viewers were surprised by just how calmly the family appeared to be dealing with the situation.
“The weirdest thing is that you guys are still there calmly explaining,” added another.
While the family’s discovery might sound almost impossible, the replies also revealed that they are apparently not the only people to have unexpectedly spotted a relative in a random photograph.
One TikTok user shared their own family’s equally unusual experience.
“My uncle got a postcard from Mackinac Island, and my grandfather was randomly in the photo eating an ice cream cone.”
Imagine buying a postcard as a souvenir only to discover your own family member casually enjoying an ice cream in the background.
In Aubrey’s case, however, one huge question remains unanswered.
It is still unclear exactly where the Airbnb owner obtained the beach photograph or how it came to be selected as decoration for the property.
The owner has yet to respond to the viral video, meaning there is currently no explanation for how a picture apparently showing the family from around 10 years earlier ended up hanging inside the San Diego rental.
Until then, the mystery remains.
Perhaps the photograph was sourced from somewhere completely ordinary and simply chosen as beach-themed artwork.
Whatever the explanation, the chances of the very people apparently featured in the image then booking the property and standing directly in front of it years later seem enough to leave the internet stunned.
For Aubrey and her family, a normal Airbnb stay quickly became a trip into their own past.
And after this story, plenty of travellers might find themselves paying a little more attention to the artwork next time they check into a holiday rental.
Because apparently, you never know who might already be hanging on the wall.
