Motorists travelling across Ireland may have spotted something unusual on motorway bridges — a teddy bear, sitting quietly beside a sign with a message that could mean everything to the right person at the right moment.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe! It might seem small. Easy to miss, even.
But for some, that simple sight could be the reason they stop, breathe, and keep going.
The teddy bears are part of A Light In The Darkness, a suicide prevention initiative founded by Mick Ryan after he lost his 22-year-old son, Sean Paul, to suicide in 2004, per the Limerick Leader.
What started from unimaginable grief has grown into a powerful act of public compassion — one designed to reach people in their darkest moments.
Each teddy is carefully placed on bridges across Ireland alongside signs carrying a direct and urgent message: a reminder that they are loved, that they matter, and that support is there.
The signs include contact details for services such as Samaritans and Ireland’s 24-hour crisis text line, offering immediate help to anyone who may need it.
Many of the bears also carry small solar lights, ensuring they remain visible long after the sun goes down.
It’s a detail that feels symbolic in itself — a literal light in the darkness.
For Mick, the idea was born from one simple hope: that something as innocent and comforting as a teddy bear might interrupt someone’s pain, even for a moment.
A pause. A second thought. A reminder that they’re not alone.
More than 20 years after losing his son, the project continues to grow, with volunteers helping place the bears on bridges across the country.
And it’s not just symbolic.
Mick has revealed he’s received calls from people who came across the bears while going through incredibly difficult times — proof that even the smallest gesture can cut through when it matters most.
In a world where people often move fast and suffer quietly, the image of a teddy bear watching over a busy motorway feels striking.
A message from someone who knows what loss looks like — and who has spent years trying to stop other families from experiencing it.
Suicide remains one of the most difficult subjects to talk about, often hidden behind silence, stigma, and isolation.
That’s what makes initiatives like A Light In The Darkness so powerful. They don’t ask for attention. They simply offer it.
And sometimes, that’s enough.
If you’re struggling, or you’re worried about someone else, please don’t suffer in silence. There are people who want to listen and help, and asking for help is never a sign of weakness.
