Buying clothes should be simple. You pick your usual size, add it to the basket, and expect it to fit when it arrives.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe! But for plenty of shoppers, that’s rarely how it goes.
Now, a viral TikTok has left thousands stunned after revealing that two sizes many people assumed were identical are actually cut completely differently — and it’s changing how some think about shopping altogether.
Content creator Makayla Smith, known on TikTok as @itsmakaylasmith, has sparked the conversation after breaking down the difference between XXL and 2XL — and for many viewers, it was the first time they’d ever realised there was one.
At first glance, it sounds like the same thing.
It isn’t.
Makayla shared a side-by-side demonstration wearing the same top in both sizes, asking followers in her caption: “Should I make a video explaining the difference between XXL and 2XL??”
That simple question quickly turned into an eye-opening moment for thousands.
The reason? While XXL is essentially a standard size progression from XL — meaning it increases proportionally in every measurement — 2XL is designed with plus-size proportions in mind.
That means it’s often cut wider in areas like the arms, waist, and abdomen, without necessarily adding extra length.
It sounds subtle, but in practice, it can completely change the fit.
Makayla’s example made the distinction obvious.
The XXL version fit much tighter and more uniformly across the body, while the 2XL offered more room to breathe and a shape that better accounted for body distribution.
For viewers, it explained years of confusing online orders and changing room frustrations.
The comments flooded in almost immediately.
“Eye opener! I didn’t know!” one user wrote.
Another added: “I [learned] something new today.”
A third commented: “WHOAAAAAA This makes so much sense,”
while a fourth said: “Noted for when im next buying for other people. clothes never seem like a safe gift but knowing this may change that!”
It’s one of those things that seems obvious once you know it — but until then, most people simply assume bigger letters mean bigger clothes.
And that’s part of the wider problem.
Sizing in fashion has long been criticised for inconsistency, with measurements often varying wildly depending on whether you’re buying jeans, dresses, t-shirts, skirts, or knitwear.
It’s something experts have been calling out for years.
Dr. Simeon Gill, a Lecturer in Fashion Technology at the University of Manchester, previously told the BBC that sizing should be “improved”.
“But to do so would need to recognize population variability and requires more sizes or a fundamental change in how we provide products,” Gill continued. “Sizing for jeans – in fact, for all clothing – should be based directly on body measurements of the individual it is made to fit.
“There is no good reason that women’s jeans should not be sized as men’s jeans are, with waist and leg length. Most of this is about existing practices, and fear of change [and] lost sales,” they added.
For now, though, the viral lesson is simple.
If you want a closer, more fitted feel, XXL may be your best bet.
But if comfort and roomier proportions matter more, 2XL could be the size you’ve actually been looking for all along.
