What started as a simple birthday photo has grown into a heartwarming annual tradition that millions of people online can’t seem to get enough of.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!A restaurant owner in Virginia has been celebrating his son’s birthday in the same unique way every year since the day he was born — by placing him inside one of the restaurant’s giant metal wing bowls and taking a photograph.
The tradition comes from The Dirty Buffalo, a popular wing restaurant in Norfolk, Virginia, whose social media pages recently shared the latest edition of the birthday ritual.
The post featured a collection of photos showing the boy’s – called RJ – growth through the years. In the earliest image, he fits comfortably inside the large metal bowl as a newborn. As the years pass, the annual birthday snapshots chart his journey from toddler to a 12-year-old, with his reactions evolving dramatically along the way.
Some of the funniest images show the youngster looking less than impressed by the tradition. In several photos he can be seen crying or clearly unhappy while being held in the oversized bowl by his dad.
But as the years went on, his attitude appeared to change, as more recent birthday photos show him smiling, laughing and embracing the annual father-son moment.
The Dirty Buffalo shared the latest update on Instagram alongside the caption: “Happy 12th Birthday to this guy!”
The wholesome post quickly caught attention online and was later featured by Pubity, introducing the story to an even wider audience.
Pubity explained the tradition to followers, writing: “A dad at The Dirty Buffalo in Norfolk, Virginia, has been placing his son in one of the restaurant’s large metal wing bowls every birthday since he was born. The left photo shows the newborn fitting perfectly inside. The right photo shows the same kid as a toddler, way too big for the bowl and not happy about it.”
The post generated hundreds of thousands of reactions, with social media users loving both the commitment to the tradition and the boy’s changing reactions throughout the years.
One of the most-liked comments perfectly summed up what many viewers noticed, saying: “The boy learns to love the bowl over time”.
Another user pointed out a milestone in the youngster’s development, joking: “You can see the exact age where kids gain a sense of humour.”
A third person wrote: “I love how he started to like it.”
Meanwhile, another commenter couldn’t help but laugh at the father’s persistence, saying: “I love that he hated it for 3 years but you kept going.”
The comments section was filled with similar observations as people tracked the progression from tears to laughter across the annual photographs.
One user joked: “Happy birthday son, now get in the bowl”
Another added: “Little bro learned to love the bowl.”
While somebody else commented: “Love as he got older he accepted his traditional bowl day.”
The Dirty Buffalo’s Instagram account, which has more than 11,000 followers, regularly shares updates from the restaurant, but few posts have resonated quite like this one. And after their most recent birthday post went viral, RJ had a message in response to all the kind birthday wishes:
Twelve years after fitting neatly inside the bowl for the very first time, the birthday boy may have outgrown the tradition physically, but judging by his smile in the latest photos, he’s finally learned to appreciate what social media users have already fallen in love with.
