British acting legend Anthony Head has sadly died at the age of 72, leaving behind a career that spanned decades across television, film, theatre and radio.

The heartbreaking news was confirmed by his daughters, actors Emily Head and Daisy Head, BBC News reports.
“It is with heavy hearts that we announce the death of our extraordinary father,” they said in a statement.
“He passed away peacefully of complications due to pneumonia, surrounded by his family.”
The pair also paid tribute to the enormous impact their father had on audiences around the world throughout his career.
“It has been, and forever will be, an honour and a privilege to be his daughters, and to have witnessed firsthand the impact both he and his work have had on so many.”
They added: “We know how dearly he will be missed by friends, colleagues and fans of the show he was in.”
According to the family, Head “loved his job very much” and “always considered himself incredibly lucky.”
For many fans, Anthony Head will forever be remembered as Giles — the intelligent, calm and endlessly patient mentor figure in Buffy the Vampire Slayer during the late 1990s and early 2000s.
His portrayal became one of the defining performances of the cult supernatural series and introduced him to a huge international audience.
But his career stretched far beyond Sunnydale.
Head remained a constant presence on British television for decades, appearing in major shows including Merlin, where he played King Uther Pendragon, as well as Little Britain, Doctor Who, Silent Witness, Motherland, The Inbetweeners and Manchild.
More recently, he found a whole new generation of fans through Ted Lasso, starring opposite Jason Sudeikis as Rupert Mannion, the manipulative former football club owner and ex-husband of Hannah Waddingham’s Rebecca Welton.
Long before becoming a fantasy and television icon, Head first rose to national fame in Britain during the 1980s thanks to a hugely popular series of Nescafé Gold Blend adverts.
Alongside Sharon Maughan, the pair became famously known as the “Gold Blend couple”, with their slow-burning coffee romance becoming a cultural phenomenon between 1987 and 1993.
Born in Camden Town, London, Head initially began his career on stage in the late 1970s before transitioning into television during the following decade.
Over the years, he built an incredibly varied acting résumé, appearing in productions including Persuasion, The Iron Lady alongside Meryl Streep, and BBC Radio 4’s long-running drama The Archers.
Away from acting, Head also suffered personal heartbreak shortly before his own passing.
His long-term partner Sarah Fisher, an animal welfare campaigner, died in December 2025 at the age of 61.
Tributes from fans across social media have already begun pouring in, with many remembering Head not only for his performances, but also for the warmth, humour and humanity he brought to every role.
His family said they believe “his legacy will live on” — something that feels undeniably true for an actor whose work touched multiple generations of television viewers around the world.
