A heartbreaking goodbye for one Pennsylvania family turned into an unforgettable act of kindness from one local restaurant.

But what began as a simple takeaway order from Texas Roadhouse quickly became a moment that restored a little faith in humanity.
Iris, an eight-and-a-half-year-old Great Dane described by Metzger as a “gentle giant,” had recently developed serious health complications after initially showing signs of breathing problems.
“About three weeks prior, she started having some health issues, breathing problems,” Metzger told TODAY.com. “That didn’t make anything better.”
What the family first believed to be a respiratory infection eventually turned out to be something far worse. Veterinarians later discovered Iris had a tumour in her nose that wasn’t responding to treatment.
Faced with the devastating decision to put her down, Metzger and his family wanted to make Iris’ final day as special as possible.
“Everybody loves their pets, and if you ever have to make that tough decision, you want them to be able to go down with some semblance of dignity, you know what I mean?” Metzger said. “We want to hold on as long as possible, but it’s not always fair to the animal.”
The family spent the day showering Iris with affection, taking her on car rides, surrounding her with loved ones and giving her endless treats, cuddles and attention.
“So, we took her on car rides. We brought her around to visit family, and I said, ‘You know, we’re going to get her a steak dinner for her last meal,’” Metzger explained.
That decision led him to place an online order with his local Texas Roadhouse for what would become Iris’ final meal: an 8-ounce thick-cut New York strip steak, steak fries, mashed potatoes and freshly baked bread.
But it was the note attached to the order that immediately caught the attention of staff.
“Last meal for our dog. Please prepare with love.”
Inside the restaurant, kitchen manager Kate Weston saw the request and instantly knew the team had to do something special.
“My to-go team actually saw the message,” Weston told TODAY.com. “I was like, ‘Oh my god, we need to make sure that this is the best meal we’ve ever made.’”
Weston, who described herself as an “animal lover,” later told WGAL: “In that moment, nothing mattered but getting Iris her last meal.”
The restaurant team went far beyond simply preparing the food.
Alongside the steak dinner, staff wrote heartfelt condolence messages on the packaging and receipt paper, while also marking the takeaway container with the words: “Made with LOVE.”
When Metzger arrived to collect the order, the emotional moment became even more personal.
“I pulled in and walked up to the to-go window and said, ‘I’m Hunter. I’m here to pick up my order,’” Metzger told WGAL. “And a few of the ladies in the room immediately came up, offered their condolences, and said, ‘We saw your note. You know, tears in all of our eyes. We definitely prepared it with love.’”
Then came another unexpected gesture.
After Iris had peacefully passed later that evening, Metzger discovered the restaurant had refunded the entire meal.
“It just blew us away,” he said. “She was just put down later that night, and the next morning, I happened to check my emails and I saw they had also refunded my meal.”
The kindness shown by the staff clearly left a lasting impression on the grieving family.
Metzger later shared the story in a private local Facebook group, posting photos of Iris enjoying her final steak dinner in the yard on a white plate.

“Not only did the restaurant not let me pay for the meal, the wonderful employees took the time to write a note on top of the container and a message on the back of the receipt (and also offered their condolences in person when I picked up the food),” he wrote.
“This kind of customer service and demonstrated compassion sets this Texas Roadhouse team a level above the rest! Thank you from the bottom of our hearts!”
The post quickly spread far beyond Pennsylvania, with people from across the globe reacting to the touching gesture.
“It’s just been really neat to read through the comments and the support and the love from people all around the world — not just here in the U.S. We’ve seen Australia, United Kingdom,” Metzger told WGAL.
“We needed that bright spot in this tough time.”
Texas Roadhouse later responded publicly to the viral story, saying the company believes in “treating guests like family.”
“While it was a simple act, we hope it brought a moment of comfort during a difficult time,” a spokesperson said, per TODAY. “We’re proud of our team for showing such empathy and humanity, values we strive to uphold every day.”
For Weston, the overwhelming reaction has only reinforced how powerful small acts of compassion can be.
“I just hope that it shows people that a little bit of kindness can go a long way,” she said. “The world feels like such an ugly place right now, and showing that love and compassion can definitely help someone and make what could be a really bad day into something amazing.”
