A dad has gone viral after being spotted carrying his dog instead of his young son — and the internet immediately had opinions.

The footage showed the father walking hand-in-hand with his young son while carrying a large dog in his other arm. Behind them, a woman can be seen pushing a stroller — although instead of carrying the child, it appeared to be filled with a large box.
The unusual scene quickly caught attention online after Luz Elena uploaded the clip alongside the caption: “When your priority is your dog, not the child.”
The video exploded on TikTok, racking up more than 4.7 million views and almost half a million likes as users flooded the comments section debating what was really going on.
At first glance, some people questioned why the father was carrying the dog while his son walked beside him.
But the overwhelming majority of viewers quickly defended the dad, pointing out there were several perfectly reasonable explanations.
“That’s how it should be!” one person commented.
Another wrote: “Good dad. Giving his son good clean exercise, even holding his hand, while also keeping his dog safe.”
Others immediately noticed an important detail in the background.
“No one mentioned the mom in the back with the push trike. The kid is walking because mom put something in the trike. Maybe dog is sick?” one user pointed out.
A large number of commenters suspected the most likely explanation was the scorching pavement temperature.
“Good call from dad. the kid has shoes on, dogs paws can’t get burned now,” one person wrote.
Another added: “Maybe the ground is hot and he doesn’t want his pups feet getting burned.”
“This is actually super sweet. The pavement is probably way to hot for the dogs paws so he is carrying him,” a third agreed, with a fourth writing: “He’s doing nothing wrong. This is cute.”
Others speculated the dog could have been injured, sick, anxious around traffic, or simply unable to walk safely in the heat.
And many viewers pointed out that while the child was perfectly comfortable wearing shoes and holding his father’s hand, the dog had no protection against the hot pavement.
Animal welfare organisations regularly warn pet owners about the dangers of walking dogs during peak temperatures.
The RSPCA advises owners to walk dogs either early in the morning or later in the evening when pavements are cooler.
Hot ground can burn a dog’s paw pads surprisingly quickly, especially during summer afternoons when surfaces absorb heat throughout the day.
One simple test often recommended by experts is placing your hand on the pavement for five seconds. If it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for your dog’s paws too.
Burned paw pads can lead to limping, blistering, redness, chewing at the feet, and in severe cases even missing skin on the pads themselves.
High temperatures can also put dogs at risk of dehydration and heatstroke, even during relatively short walks.
Many commenters therefore argued the father was actually being responsible rather than neglectful.
And judging by the video, the young boy didn’t appear bothered in the slightest — happily walking alongside his dad while holding his hand the entire time.
