Tom Nichols, the son of the former Outdoor Boys creator, has gone viral after uploading a video documenting what he described as his first “solo” bushcraft camping trip deep in Alaska.

The video, titled My 1st Bushcraft Camping Trip in Alaska, has already pulled in massive attention online – amassing 3.1 million views. Longtime subscribers are calling the upload an emotional “passing of the torch” moment for the hugely popular outdoor family.

Uploaded on May 9, the nearly 24-minute video follows Tom as he heads into a remote valley near the family’s off-grid area to attempt an overnight survival-style camp in freezing conditions.

Unlike a typical camping trip, Tom doesn’t rely on a tent or modern comforts.

Instead, he builds his own lean-to shelter using fallen timber and a tarp, creates a raised sleeping platform to avoid the frozen ground beneath him, and attempts to start fires using traditional flint and steel techniques while battling rain and cold temperatures.

The conditions quickly become unforgiving.

Throughout the trip, Tom is repeatedly shown soaked by the weather as he works to reinforce his shelter and keep his fire alive long enough to cook and stay warm.

Although the challenge was framed as a solo experience, Luke Nichols remained camped nearby for safety and occasionally checked in using walkie-talkies.

At certain points in the video, Luke appears briefly to offer advice on finding dry wood and improving the structure of the shelter, but the majority of the trip centres around Tom handling the challenges independently.

“My parents aren’t crazy,” Tom says at one point in the video, clarifying that his father stayed nearby in case something went wrong.

Viewers online largely praised the setup, with many saying it struck the right balance between teaching independence and maintaining safety in Alaska’s unpredictable wilderness.

Some pointed out that the experience wasn’t completely solo due to Luke’s nearby presence, but most agreed the situation was entirely reasonable given the freezing weather and wildlife risks associated with remote camping in Alaska.

The upload also marked a rare appearance from Luke Nichols himself following his decision to scale back regular content creation on the Outdoor Boys channel in 2025.

The beloved YouTuber previously stepped away from consistent uploads due to burnout and a desire to spend more time focusing on family life and church leadership responsibilities. During his time on YouTube, Luke had amassed a huge 19.8 million subscribers on the platform.

For longtime fans of the channel, seeing Luke back on screen alongside Tom carried an extra layer of nostalgia.

Many fans have reflected on watching Tom grow up through years of Outdoor Boys videos, making this latest upload feel especially significant.
