The internet has found yet another image capable of splitting opinion in seconds, and this time the argument isn’t about colours, sounds, or whether pineapple belongs on pizza.

Instead, social media users are locked in debate over a blurry set of hidden numbers that apparently look completely different depending on who’s staring at them.

The now-viral optical illusion started making the rounds after X user @benonwine posted a monochrome image filled with a jagged black-and-grey pattern alongside the caption: “DO you see a number? If so what number?”

At first glance, the image just looks like visual static. But after focusing for a few seconds, many users began spotting hidden digits buried inside the swirl-like pattern.

The problem? Almost nobody agrees on what the actual number is.

Some people claimed they could only make out a handful of digits, while others insisted they could see a much longer sequence hidden within the design.

One confused user wrote: “I can only see 528. Does that mean anything about my eyesight?”

Another replied: “45283? Can’t make out extreme left or right?”

Meanwhile, someone else insisted the image clearly showed “15283” — despite plenty of users admitting they couldn’t see a “1” anywhere in the picture at all.

As the debate spread, even more answers started appearing across the replies, with many convinced they had finally cracked the illusion.

One of the most common answers people settled on was “3452839”, although plenty of users still couldn’t see all seven digits no matter how long they stared at the image.

And naturally, that only made the argument even bigger.

The illusion quickly drew comparisons to previous viral internet debates like “The Dress” — the infamous photo that saw millions of people disagreeing over whether a dress was blue and black or white and gold.

But unlike colour perception, this latest illusion may actually come down to something a little more technical involving the way our eyes process contrast.

Offering a possible explanation, one person on X wrote: “I’m guessing the numbers you see depends on your ‘contrast sensitivity’ (different from what a standard eye measures). It can be tested by opticians. Worth doing if you’re struggling, as it can affect your ability to see at night, or in rain, fog, etc.”

According to the Vision Center, contrast sensitivity refers to a person’s ability to distinguish objects from their background, especially when there isn’t a strong separation between the two.

The organisation explains: “contrast sensitivity is the ability to distinguish between an object and the background behind it.”

It also notes: “Contrast sensitivity is different from visual acuity, which measures how clear your vision is at a given distance.”

In other words, somebody can still have perfectly good eyesight while struggling to pick out the hidden numbers inside this illusion.

Vision specialists can test contrast sensitivity using dedicated visual exams, and reduced sensitivity can sometimes make things like driving at night, heavy rain, or fog more difficult.

Interestingly, the illusion seems to work differently depending on screen brightness, viewing angle, and even how far away users hold their phones from their faces. Some people reported seeing extra digits after squinting, while others claimed the numbers disappeared completely once they focused too hard.

And just to make things even more frustrating, there still doesn’t appear to be one universally agreed answer.

For some, it’s five digits. For others, seven.

And for a few unlucky people, it’s apparently nothing at all.
