A chill down your spine. Goosebumps on your arms. Maybe even a lump in your throat.

Well, it turns out, not everyone experiences that. And according to research, if you do, your brain might actually be wired a little differently.

A study led by PhD student Matthew Sachs at the University of Southern California explored why some people feel these intense physical reactions to music — often referred to as “chills” — while others don’t.

Participants were split into two groups: those who reported feeling shivers when listening to music, and those who didn’t. After listening to several tracks, researchers scanned their brains.

What they found was a clear difference.

“[The ten who felt shivers] have a higher volume of fibres that connect their auditory cortex to the areas associated with emotional processing, which means the two areas communicate better,” Sachs explained, via Classic FM.

In simple terms, people who get goosebumps from music have stronger connections between the part of the brain that processes sound and the part that processes emotion.

That stronger connection means the music doesn’t just sound good — it feels more intense.

“People who get the chills have an enhanced ability to experience intense emotions,” Sachs said.

It’s not just about structure either.

Another study – conducted at Harvard Medical School – found that “higher white matter connectivity was observed in people with high emotional empathy, whereas lower white matter connectivity was observed in people with social-emotional impairments.”

So those physical reactions — the chills, the goosebumps — could be linked to emotional sensitivity and how deeply someone connects with what they’re hearing.

Interestingly, not everyone experiences it. Research suggests that only about half of people feel these kinds of strong bodily reactions to music, even though around 96% have experienced goosebumps at least once in their life.

So what actually triggers it?

Scientists believe it often comes down to surprise.

When a song breaks your expectations — a sudden key change, a powerful vocal, a crescendo building into something bigger — your brain reacts. It’s constantly predicting what comes next in music. When that prediction is wrong, it creates what’s known as a “prediction error”.

At first, your brain treats that unexpected moment as a potential threat.

Your amygdala — the part responsible for detecting danger — kicks in, triggering a physical response. That’s where the goosebumps come from. But then, almost instantly, your brain realises there’s no danger.

Instead, it releases dopamine — the same chemical linked to pleasure and reward.

That’s why the feeling flips from tension to something powerful and emotional. And it’s why certain songs can give you chills over and over again.

As one explanation puts it, goosebumps today don’t serve the same survival purpose they once did — but they still signal something important. “Something has gone deeply under our skin,” Charlotte Sachs writes, per Radboud University.

There are also personality factors at play.

People who are more open to new experiences, more curious, or more musically trained are more likely to feel these reactions.

And while the research focused specifically on music, scientists believe the same emotional sensitivity could apply to other forms of art too.

Still, experts are clear on one thing. This isn’t about one group being “better” than another — it’s simply a difference in how people process emotion.

But if you’re someone who regularly gets chills when a song hits just right? There’s a good chance your brain is just a little more tuned in to the emotional side of sound.

And that feeling? It’s not random. It’s your brain lighting up in a way not everyone gets to experience. So the next time it happens, I’m sure you’ll appreciate that song a little bit more.
