A young boy battling multiple brain tumours has inspired an extraordinary wave of generosity after setting up a tiny lemonade stand to help fund cancer research — eventually leading to an anonymous donor contributing more than $100,000 to the cause.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!Twelve-year-old Rowan Rieve, from metro Atlanta, originally raised just $22.25 selling lemonade and tea with his friends. But what started as a simple act of kindness quickly became something much bigger after his story spread online.
And the reason behind it all makes the response even more emotional.
Rowan has spent years fighting for his life after first being diagnosed with medulloblastoma, a malignant brain tumour commonly found in children.
According to reports from CBS affiliate WSB and Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation, Rowan was just eight years old when his family rushed him to the emergency room at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta after he became seriously unwell and appeared “drained and gaunt.”
Following surgery, doctors confirmed the devastating diagnosis.
His treatment journey has since included radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and intense rehabilitation that forced him to relearn how to walk and talk.
As if that was not enough, Rowan was later diagnosed with additional tumours, including a glioma and recurrent medulloblastoma.
During further testing, doctors also discovered Rowan has Li Fraumeni Syndrome (LFS), a rare condition linked to a higher risk of developing cancers and tumours because the body struggles to produce proteins that normally prevent abnormal cell growth.
Despite everything he has endured, Rowan’s focus somehow turned outward rather than inward.
After learning about federal cuts to brain tumour research funding last year, he decided he wanted to help.
So he and his friends opened a lemonade and tea stand.

The amount raised may have seemed small to some — $22.25 —, but for Rowan, it represented something much more important.
“I felt that the hospital needed, I guess, more than I did,” Rowan told WSB.
That quiet act of selflessness left a huge impression on the medical team treating him.
Dr Tobey MacDonald, Rowan’s neuro-oncologist at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, said he was stunned by the gesture.
“First, I was absolutely floored by Rowan’s donation to help other children with cancer immediately upon hearing me just tell his mom that national funding had been cut for one of our most important clinical research groups aimed at finding new treatments to cure brain tumors in children,” MacDonald told PEOPLE in a statement. “This tells you of the unselfish and truly giving nature of this young man fighting for his own life!”
MacDonald explained that Rowan’s attitude throughout years of treatment has consistently inspired those around him.
“Given that he never complains about the treatments we have given him over several years for two types of malignant brain tumours, I guess I should not have been surprised. That is Rowan,” MacDonald continued.
Once Rowan’s story became public, people across the country began responding in a remarkable way.
Many started donating $22.25 themselves in honour of Rowan’s original lemonade stand fundraiser.
Then came the moment nobody expected.
An anonymous donor stepped forward with a contribution of more than $100,000.
For MacDonald, the reaction felt entirely fitting for a boy who has inspired so many during his battle with cancer.
“I was pleased but not shocked by the viral reaction since that is precisely the type of hope and light that Rowan inspires in others,” MacDonald said. “I am just happy that his story got out – I could not possibly keep to myself.”
He added: “To me personally, this is exactly the reason I went into the field of pediatric cancer, and childhood brain tumors in particular, because you see such things from children that you can’t imagine and that simply inspire you to fight on and instill hope in all that we do.”
Rowan’s parents, Charlan and Bob Rieve, admitted that watching their son continue to care about others while enduring his own health battle has been deeply emotional.
“With that lemonade stand, Rowan chose to give to help those who are dedicated to eradicating cancer in kids,” they told PEOPLE in a statement.
The couple said they continue to pray for Rowan’s full recovery and future.
“We are humbled and honored to watch him lean into generosity and service to others despite or perhaps because of his own war on cancer that’s over four years and counting,” they said.
They also described Rowan as determined to continue fully participating in life despite the unimaginable challenges he faces.
“We couldn’t be prouder of him! Rowan’s heart and light are inspiring people multiple times his age and still being himself—his sweet, smart, funny, quiet, kind self,” they added.
Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta has since established an online fundraiser aiming to match Rowan’s original $22.25 donation to support cancer research efforts.
And while the figures attached to the story have now become enormous, it is Rowan’s original gesture that people cannot stop talking about.
