Dan Simpson — now widely known as “Dan the Pizza Man” — has officially retired after a viral moment sparked an outpouring of support that raised more than $170,000 for him.

As reported by PEOPLE, the Idaho-based Domino’s delivery driver, who is around 70 years old, had been working two jobs for years. His second job — delivering pizzas — is where the story that changed everything began.

Simpson was delivering an order to customer Brian Wilson when he realised the store had run out of Diet Coke — part of the original order. While most would have simply delivered the food and moved on, Simpson decided to go a step further.

He stopped at another store and bought the drink himself.

A Ring doorbell video captured the moment he explained what he’d done.

“I stopped at the store,” Dan said.

Caught off guard by the gesture, Wilson replied: “Aw, you did not have to do that.”

Simpson’s response was simple: “It’s okay.”

What followed was just as telling.

Wilson offered to increase the tip, saying, “You deserve more than that. I don’t have any cash on me.”

But Simpson wasn’t interested in anything extra.

“Oh, don’t worry about it,” he said, adding that the tip he’d already received was enough. Instead, he asked for something else entirely — that the customer let the company know he was a “good driver.”

The touching video quickly went viral, and what seemed like a small act resonated with thousands.

Wilson, struck by what he described as a rare level of care, decided to act.

“We were honestly blown away. That level of care and kindness is rare these days.”

He set up a GoFundMe with a clear goal — to give something back to the man who had spent years quietly doing the right thing.

“Let’s show Dan that his kindness didn’t go unnoticed,” Wilson wrote. “Let’s help him step into retirement feeling appreciated, supported, and celebrated.”

The response was overwhelming.

The fundraiser ultimately raised $171,635, with a check being presented to Simpson on April 30 — the same day he officially retired.

“Dan is now officially retired!” Wilson shared in an update on the fundraising bad. “Your support and kind words have been truly life-changing for Dan. We’re honored to have been part of this experience and can’t wait to see him enjoy every moment of his well-deserved retirement!”

For Simpson, the moment was surreal.

“What a retirement gift that was,” he said KTVB.

After years of hard work — including 14 years delivering pizzas on top of his main job — he’s now looking ahead to a very different pace of life. “I’m ready for normal again,” he said, after the whirlwind of attention.

His also revealed that his plans are simple: “I might buy a van […] I was thinking about just hopping in my car and driving to the coast today.”

“The world is my oyster, kind of – as long as it’s not too expensive,” Dan added.

Dan hopes to spend time photographing native plants, relaxing with his cat, and giving back, particularly to addiction recovery organisations – the kind of things a man of his age should be focused on.

Simpson has been sober for around 24 years, following a difficult period in his life that included two prison sentences for DUIs. He revealed: “When I got out, I said, ‘that’s it,’ and I knew I’d never drink again.”

Since then, he’s focused on working hard and staying on the right path. “I’ve basically worked two jobs, and I worked hard and tried to do the right thing,” he added.

Now, he wants to help others facing similar struggles. “We’ve just got to love one another, you know? I mean that’s what we have to do.”

He also made sure to thank the people who made his retirement possible.

“I really appreciate all the donations you made to me,” he said. “You make my life quite a little bit easier.”

Despite retiring, Simpson isn’t planning to step away from work completely — he’s even considering continuing to deliver pizzas on weekends just to stay active.
