Sam Neill has delivered the health update his fans had been hoping for.

After half a decade living with a rare and aggressive form of blood cancer, the Jurassic Park star has confirmed he is officially cancer-free.

The 78-year-old actor revealed the news in an interview with 7News, describing the moment he learned his body was finally clear of the disease as nothing short of remarkable.

“I’ve just had a scan just now and there is no cancer in my body, that’s an extraordinary thing,” he said. “I’m very, very excited that this can happen.”

Neill had been battling stage-three angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma, a rare type of non-Hodgkin lymphoma, for around five years — a journey that, at times, looked bleak.

“I’ve been living with a particular type of lymphoma for about five years and I was on chemotherapy and the pretty miserable business but it was keeping me alive,” he explained.

But the treatment that had been sustaining him eventually stopped working. “Then the chemo stopped working. I was at a loss and it looked like I was on the way out, which wasn’t ideal obviously,” the Peaky Blinders star explained.

It’s a stark admission from an actor who has always been open about the realities of his condition — not shying away from the physical and emotional toll it took on his day-to-day life.

In previous interviews, Neill described how the treatment cycle impacted him week after week.

“It’s just meant that every second week it was a case of forget about the weekend because that would be a bit grim,” he previously told the Herald Sun.

Yet even during the hardest periods, his outlook remained grounded. “But other than that, it’s great to be alive and working and in beautiful places,” he said.

The turning point came through a cutting-edge treatment known as CAR T-cell therapy — a revolutionary approach that modifies a patient’s own blood cells to better fight cancer. He is now his experience to push for wider access to the treatment that helped save him, with CAR T-cell therapy still largely limited to clinical trials, including for conditions like myeloma.

“It’s science at its best,” Neill said.

After undergoing the therapy as part of clinical trials, the results were transformative.

“I’ve had a scan just now, and there is no cancer in my body. This is an extraordinary thing,” he said.

The breakthrough hasn’t just given him a new lease of life — it’s also reignited his passion for work.

“It’s time I did another movie,” Neill revealed – news that we’re sure will be celebrated by his fans across the globe.

That desire to keep creating has been a consistent theme throughout his battle. Despite facing a life-threatening illness, Neill made it clear he never wanted his diagnosis to define him.

“The last thing I want is for people to obsess about the cancer thing because I’m not really interested in cancer,” he said previously. “I’m not really interested in anything other than living.”

Even when confronting his own mortality, his perspective remained strikingly calm.

“I’m not in any way frightened of dying,” he admitted in a 2023 interview on Australian Story. “That doesn’t worry me. It’s never worried me from the beginning, but I would be annoyed.”

Now, with a clean bill of health, that focus on living — and working — is top of the list for the beloved actor.
