High above the chaos of a bustling Indian city, a mansion sits in the sky — untouched, unoccupied, and wrapped in controversy.

This isn’t your typical billionaire hideaway. Rising 400 feet into the skyline of Bengaluru, a sprawling “sky mansion” crowns a 33-storey luxury tower, redefining what it means to live at the top. Stretching across a staggering 40,000 square feet over two floors, the residence is less a penthouse and more a private estate suspended in in the air.

Everything about it screams wealth… and excess.

There’s a helipad for seamless arrivals, landscaped gardens that bring greenery to the clouds, and an infinity pool that appears to spill into the city below. Add in a full 360-degree viewing deck, and the property becomes as much a statement as it is a home — a symbol of wealth engineered to defy both gravity and expectation.

What makes it even more remarkable is its separation from the building beneath it. While luxury apartments fill the floors below, the mansion exists as a completely independent structure — an exclusive sanctuary towering above the rest.

Constructing something of this scale at such a height was never going to be straightforward. In fact, Irfan Razack – chairman of Prestige Estates Projects – acknowledged the challenge behind bringing the vision to life.

“It was a challenge to construct the mansion on a huge cantilever at that height, but we have ensured we build it exactly the way it was conceived,” Razack said, per Business Insider.

The result is a property valued at an eye-watering $20 million — a figure that reflects not just its size and features, but the sheer ambition behind it.

Yet for all its grandeur, there’s a catch: The man it was built for may never live in it.

The mansion belongs to businessman and politician Vijay Mallya, once dubbed the “king of good times.” But his story took a dramatic turn eight years ago when he left India for the UK amid mounting financial troubles. Reports suggest debts exceeding $1 billion (£842 million), with claims involving 17 Indian banks.

Mallya has consistently pushed back against the accusations, insisting there has been no wrongdoing on his part.

“All enquiries conducted have failed to find evidence of misappropriation of funds by Kingfisher Airlines or myself […] Despite pledging blue-chip securities and depositing significant amounts in court, a successful disinformation campaign has ensured my becoming the poster boy of all bank NPAs,” he previously declared in a statement, via the Business Standard.

His ongoing legal situation has left his future — and any potential return to India — uncertain.

British Security Minister Tom Tugendhat has previously made it clear that the UK does not serve as a safe haven for those attempting to avoid legal accountability, reinforcing that due process between both countries remains in motion.

Meanwhile, his mansion waits…

Despite being fully completed, it remains empty, looming over Bengaluru like a monument to both ambition and absence. Locals and onlookers continue to admire its design, drawn to its unique presence in the skyline.

Online, reactions have ranged from awe to disbelief. One X user called it “a testament to luxury and innovation”, while another described it as “certainly an impressive feat of architecture and engineering”.

One Instagram user couldn’t help but call out the gauche juxtaposition of the situation, typing: “He has that and the poverty in India is of epidemic proportions, shame on him.”

While others went more personal, such as this Instagram user who typed: “Even if I had the money, I couldn’t do that, I’m terrified of heights and have an intense fear of things collapsing in on themselves.”

Because for all the controversy surrounding its owner, the structure itself stands as something undeniably striking — a rare fusion of engineering, luxury, and spectacle.

For me, though, I can’t help but compare it to the sky-high mansion seen in Pokémon when Drowzee helps those billionaires fall asleep:

But unlike the fictional worlds it evokes, this is very real property… albeit, very empty.

For now, the $20 million mansion remains suspended in limbo, both physically and figuratively.
