In February 2020, a 12-year-old boy named Andrés made a decision no child should ever have to make — he gave up his puppy to save its life, CNN reports.

The young boy left his pit bull outside a shelter in Michoacán, carefully placing him there with a toy for comfort and a letter that would soon spread across the internet.

“My name is Andrés and I am 12 years old. My mom and I decided to leave my dog in your hands, hiding it from my dad because he is thinking about selling him. But he mistreats and kicks him. One day he kicked him so hard that he hurt his tail. I hope you can help and take care of him,” he wrote.

The heart-wrenching note adds: “I left him a stuffed animal so he won’t forget me.”

This wasn’t abandonment. It was protection.

According to the rescue group Refugio Xollin – who took the puppy in – Andrés and his mother acted in secret, trying to shield the dog from a situation that had already turned violent.

The shelter named the puppy René.

When they shared his story online, the response was immediate and overwhelming. More than 300 people from across the country came forward, hoping to give René a new home.

But amid the flood of interest, the shelter made an important point.

“If everyone opened their heart and their home like this little dog, they would have adopted all our dogs from the shelter,” the rescuers said.

René was treated for his injuries, dewormed, and placed on the path to recovery. Slowly, the trauma he arrived with began to ease.

Meanwhile, life for Andrés also began to change.

Around a year later, he and his mother had moved away and separated from his father — a quiet but significant step toward a safer future, according to Pubity.

As of 2025, René was still living at the refuge, waiting for a permanent home. But the difference in his life was clear.

Described as “playful” and “loving”, the once-injured puppy had grown into a dog full of personality. He had even picked up an affectionate nickname — “Baby Piggy”.

And it all traces back to one moment of courage from a young boy.

With this story is the important message that – if you’re genuinely looking to welcome a dog into your family – countless pups are looking for their forever homes at nearby shelters.
