What started as an ordinary high school prom in Oklahoma soon turned into something far more powerful — a moment of recognition that no one in the room will forget anytime soon.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!Just days after putting his life on the line, Pauls Valley High School principal Kirk Moore walked into prom not just as an educator, but as a hero.
By the end of the night, the students made sure that it had been made official, as he was crowned prom king.
The tribute came less than two weeks after Moore was shot in the leg while tackling an armed intruder inside the school — an act that police say likely prevented a far more devastating outcome.
As reported by NBC News, the incident unfolded when 20-year-old Victor Lee Hawkins entered the school armed with two semi-automatic handguns. Investigators said he ordered people to the ground and attempted to open fire, only for his weapon to malfunction.
Moments later, after clearing the issue, he fired again but missed. As students began to flee, Moore charged in.
In a decisive move captured on school surveillance footage, the principal tackled the gunman, pinned him down, and disarmed him with the help of a vice principal.
During the struggle, Moore was shot in the leg.
Despite his injury, the outcome could have been far worse.
“It doesn’t surprise me the actions that he took, but it is amazing, the actions that he took,” Pauls Valley Police Chief Don May said, via NBC DFW. “There’s not a doubt in my mind that he saved kids’ lives.”
Authorities later confirmed the suspect allegedly intended to carry out a mass shooting, telling investigators he wanted to replicate past school attacks. He now faces multiple felony charges, including shooting with intent to kill.
Moore, meanwhile, was hospitalised but has since confirmed he is recovering.
In a statement following the incident, he said he is “healthy and recovering” and thanked the community for “an outpouring of love and support.”
He also reflected on the preparation that led to his split-second decision.
“Like so many educators around the country, we prepare for these events through training and careful assessment of the threats,” he said. “I am grateful that my instincts and training, as well as God’s hand, were available to me.”
That instinct didn’t just stop a tragedy — it reshaped how an entire student body saw their principal.
By the time prom arrived, the mood had shifted from shock to appreciation.
As Moore entered the venue, students cheered, high-fived him, and celebrated him as Nickelback’s ‘Hero’ played in the background. Then came the moment that summed it all up: he was crowned prom king.
Online, the reaction has been just as emotional.
“And now I’m balling. Well deserved sir!” one person wrote on TikTok, with another adding: “Yes sir!!! So deserving. Absolute HERO.”
“Wow! This is awesome!! The way you all are screaming! I hope he knows what a hero he is,” read another comment.
Others pointed to the lasting impact of his actions. “Because of him… ALLLLLLLLLLLLLL the kids were able to attend!!!!” one comment said.
And perhaps the most fitting tribute came from within the school community itself. With one student writing: “The Pauls Valley High Student Body has spoken! Prom King Legend…Kirk Moore.”
Moore has worked in the district for more than 35 years, but it’s this moment — equal parts courage and recognition — that has defined his legacy in the eyes of those he protects every day.
If only we had more people in the world like Mr. Moore.
