It looks like the simplest choice in the world — until you actually stop and think about it.

A photo of an American home improvement store’s pencil display has gone viral online after presenting customers with what appears to be two identical deals… that have somehow sparked a full-blown internet debate.

At first glance, the setup is straightforward.

On one side: left-handed pencils priced at 20 cents each. On the other: right-handed pencils offered at five for $1.

Same price per pencil, right?

Well, not everyone is convinced.

The image – which News.com.au reports was taken at a Home Depot branch – was shared widely on social media and quickly divided opinion. Comments sections on Facebook, Instagram, and X saw people arguing over whether the two options are actually equal — or if one is quietly the better deal.

Some users were adamant there’s more going on beneath the surface.

“This is NOT the same. On the right side, you are FORCED to purchase the number of pencils the seller wants to sell you. On the left side, you can purchase the exact number you want. This is bulk consumerism, don’t fall for ‘but they’re the same price’ or ‘left vs right hand is the same’ those are distractions from the psychological effects of tricking you into buying more than you need ,” one person argued.

It’s a take that immediately reframes the whole situation — not as a maths problem, but as a question of consumer behaviour. And plenty of people agreed.

“20¢ because I can choose to only buy 1, versus having to buy 5,” another Instagram user wrote, backing the idea that flexibility matters more than unit price.

Others pointed out the obvious reality of how shoppers behave in practice. “Lol I love how the ‘right handed pencil’ appears to have significantly more demand,” one comment read, suggesting most people are instinctively drawn to the “bulk deal”.

But not everyone was buying into the deeper analysis. In fact, some dismissed the debate entirely.

“Anyone debating this is unfit for intelligent conversation.” one user wrote bluntly, clearly unimpressed with the discourse. While another summed it up in the simplest terms possible: “6 of one, half a dozen of the other”

Still, the conversation didn’t stop there – some went as far as to lambast those even bothering to debate the image.

“This is why the Power Rangers had to yell out what colour they were,” one joked, as the thread drifted into classic internet chaos. “People arguing on which deal is better than the other get to vote btw,” one comment read, dripping with sarcasm.

And perhaps the most dramatic reaction of all came from someone who clearly felt the whole situation said something bigger: “We are so doomed”

Despite the jokes, the post taps into something surprisingly real — the way pricing, choice, and presentation can influence how people think they’re getting value.

Because while the maths might say both deals are identical, the psychology tells a slightly different story.

So, that all being said… which do you think is the better deal?
