It’s not every day you switch on your computer and see your own obituary — but that’s exactly what happened to Fox.

The Back to the Future icon was forced to reassure fans he was alive and well after CNN mistakenly published a tribute titled “Remembering the life of Michael J. Fox,” sparking confusion and concern across social media.

The report, which included both an article and video, was quickly taken down — but not before screenshots began circulating online, fuelling speculation that the legendary actor had passed away.

CNN later issued a public apology, stating (via TMZ): “The package was published in error; we have removed it from our platforms and send our apologies to Michael J. Fox and his family.”

But in typical fashion, Fox didn’t respond with outrage — he responded with humour.

Taking to Threads, he addressed the situation head-on, writing: “How do you react when you turn on the TV and CNN is reporting your death?”

Rather than stopping there, he leaned into the absurdity of the moment with a list of possible reactions.

Writing on Threads, he said: “Do you…A) switch to MNSBC, or whatever they are calling themselves these days, (B) Pour scolding hot water on your lap, if it hurts your fine, (C) Call your wife, hopefully she’s concerned but reassuring, (D) Relax, they do this once every year, (E) Ask yourself wtf ? I thought the world was ending, but apparently it’s just me and I’m ok. Love, Mike.”

It’s a response that perfectly captures Fox’s long-standing ability to find lightness even in strange or difficult situations — something that has defined much of his public life.

And crucially, the actor made it clear there was no cause for concern.

Just hours before the mix-up, Fox had been out in Los Angeles, appearing at PaleyFest for a panel discussion on the Apple TV+ series Shrinking, where he recently made a guest appearance — his first on-screen role since 2020.

Fox even expressed interest in continuing his involvement with the show, telling the audience: “I would love to do it – it would be my honour.”

The appearance marked a notable moment in his career, particularly after previously stepping back from acting due to the challenges of Parkinson’s disease, which he was diagnosed with at just 29 years old.

Despite those challenges, Fox has remained active, both publicly and professionally, continuing his advocacy work and occasionally returning to the screen when possible.

Reflecting on his experience on the set of Shrinking, he shared how different the process felt compared to earlier in his career.

“It was the first time ever I get to show up on-set, and I didn’t have to worry about am I too tired or coughing or anything,” he told People. “I just do it. It was really good, because for the moments when I say, ‘I’m not going to be able to do this,’ then I say, ‘Well, I’ll just deal with how I can’t do it in the scene.’ And you get through it.”

While the mistaken report may have caused a brief moment of panic, it ultimately served as a reminder of just how much Fox still means to audiences around the world.

And for his part, he made it clear he’s still very much here — and still approaching everything with the same wit that’s made him so widely admired.
