At 30,000 feet, where nerves can spiral and there’s nowhere to go, one simple act of kindness turned an ordinary flight into something passengers won’t forget any time soon.

What began as a routine early morning journey from Charlotte to New York quickly became a viral moment — not because of turbulence or delays, but because of compassion.

A Delta flight attendant has been widely praised after going above and beyond to support a passenger who was struggling with anxiety about flying. And the moment, captured in a photo and shared online, has struck a chord with hundreds of thousands.

Passenger Molly Lee, from Raleigh, North Carolina, was on board the flight when she noticed something happening a few rows away. A male crew member had stepped into the aisle — not to serve drinks or give instructions — but to sit beside a distressed passenger, holding her hand as she tried to steady herself.

Lee later shared the moment on Facebook, alongside a heartfelt message that quickly gained traction.

“Check out this gem of a flight attendant that was on our flight from CLT to JFK,” she wrote. “This woman was so nervous about flying, so he explained every sound and bump and even sat here holding her hand when it still got to be too much for her.”

The flight attendant was later identified as Floyd Dean-Shannon, a 44-year-old who had only been working with Delta for three months at the time the photo was snapped back in 2023.

But experience didn’t matter in that moment — awareness did. Speaking about the situation, Dean-Shannon explained how he noticed the passenger almost immediately.

“It was our first flight out,” he told Good Morning America. “And it kind of dawned on me … she had a look like, ‘I don’t want to be here.’ She was nervous.”

Rather than leaving her to manage it alone, he made a decision that would define the flight.

“I went on ahead and held my coffee and I sat there next to her for like 10 minutes explaining to her… ‘So you’re gonna feel like this or a little up and down feeling… The gears are coming out. You’re going to hear all of this,'” he said. “But I guaranteed the safety — that if nothing was not right on this plane, we would never lift off the ground.”

And it didn’t stop there.

As the flight progressed, he stayed close, continuing to reassure her through every unfamiliar sound and sensation.

Lee recalled how he handled each moment with patience.

“[The flight attendant] took notice of that and said, ‘I’ve got you,’ and just was very reassuring, just told her not to worry, it was going to be totally safe and she was tearing up,” she recalled to ABC 11.

“With every little noise, she’d be like, ‘What’s that?’” Lee added. “[He would say], ‘That’s OK. That’s just the jet bridge pulling away’ or whatever the case may be. And that really helped her.”

In between the reassurance, Dean-Shannon even went a step further to help the passenger relax. “I’m happy I made her a mimosa, made her you know comfortable,” he said. “She was relaxed. She was more calm. She was chit-chatting and taking pictures and everything.”

For Lee, the moment was impossible to ignore, and one she felt she needed to share with the world. “I has to take a picture because it was moving. It was so beautiful to see somebody just extend their heart like that to a stranger,” she said.

The post quickly took off online, racking up more than 500,000 likes and over 21,000 shares, with thousands of comments praising the gesture.

“MY GOODNESS, MY GOD, THIS PHOTO IS EVERYTHING I WISH THE WORLD WAS ON A DAILY BASIS AND WHY I STILL BELIEVE!” wrote one user, with another adding: “Delta has noticeably nicer flight attendants than other airlines.”

And for those who’ve experienced the same fear, the moment hit even closer to home.

“I hope the company gets to see this picture!” wrote another. “I used to be totally phobic about flying, it was next to impossible to get me on board! Thank goodness for kind and caring flight attendants and pilots who educated me and held my hand and brought me alcohol during turbulence! This flight attendant is an angel.”

Despite the wave of praise, Dean-Shannon has remained grounded about the attention.

“I have two people that actually taught me to act like that and they are both nurses,” he said. “I got a lot of love to give everybody and I try to hold that dear to me.”

And when asked about the recognition, his response was simple” “When you get on an aircraft, it’s not about us, it’s about you. And if you’re not feeling good, I want to be there to say, ‘Hey, what’s wrong? Is there something I can do?'”

Lee, meanwhile, has made her feelings clear — and she’s hoping the airline takes notice.

“@Delta, Floyd Dean-Shannon deserves a raise! I just really hope that Floyd gets what he deserves, which is everyone’s love, everyone’s praise, everyone’s admiration. I’m so happy that he’s getting that recognition. And I really hope it leads to good things for him.”

In an industry often defined by schedules, procedures, and precision, this was something different.

And for one passenger, that made all the difference.
