A truck carrying more than 400,000 KitKat bars has vanished in what sounds like the plot of a movie — but is in fact a very real and very large-scale chocolate heist.

According to Nestlé, the shipment — totalling a staggering 413,793 KitKat bars — disappeared while being transported across Europe. The truck had departed from central Italy and was scheduled to deliver the chocolate to Poland, but it never reached its destination, The Independent reports.

Somewhere along the journey, both the vehicle and its cargo simply vanished.

In total, thieves made off with more than 12 tonnes of chocolate.

Nestlé has not revealed exactly where the truck was lost, and as of now, both the vehicle and the missing bars remain unaccounted for.

The company confirmed that the stolen shipment was part of a new range of KitKat products intended for distribution across Europe, raising concerns that the chocolate could eventually appear through unofficial sales channels.

Despite the scale of the theft, the company says there is no risk to consumers, and the incident is not expected to impact supply — even with high-demand periods like Easter approaching.

Still, the situation has prompted a public response from the brand, which didn’t shy away from addressing the incident with a mix of humor and concern.

“We’ve always encouraged people to have a break with KitKat – but it seems thieves have taken the message too literally and made a break with more than 12 tonnes of our chocolate,” a spokesperson said, via Fox Business.

But behind the lighthearted tone, the company made it clear the issue is part of a much bigger problem. “Whilst we appreciate the criminals’ exceptional taste, the fact remains that cargo theft is an escalating issue for businesses of all sizes,” KitKat said.

They added that increasingly advanced methods are being used in such crimes: “With more sophisticated schemes being deployed on a regular basis, we have chosen to go public with our own experience in the hope that it raises awareness of an increasingly common criminal trend.”

In an effort to track down the stolen goods, Nestlé also revealed that the missing bars are traceable.

Each product carries a unique batch code, and anyone who scans one of the stolen items will be directed to contact KitKat — a move that could help identify where the chocolate ends up.

While the disappearance of such a large shipment may sound almost absurd, it highlights a growing issue within global supply chains, where high-value goods are increasingly targeted during transit.

For now, though, the mystery remains unsolved.

Somewhere in Europe, a truck carrying hundreds of thousands of chocolate bars is still missing — and until it turns up, this unusual heist is likely to remain one of the sweetest unsolved thefts in recent memory.
