There are big moments in life — and then there are record-breaking ones that leave an entire hospital doing double takes.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!A woman in Nashville has done exactly that after giving birth to a baby weighing close to 13 pounds, instantly turning what is already a life-changing day into something far more extraordinary.
Shelby Martin welcomed her son, Cassian, at TriStar Centennial Women’s Hospital, and he didn’t just arrive — he made history. The newborn officially became the biggest baby delivered at the hospital in the past three years, setting a new benchmark that staff won’t forget anytime soon.
And while the numbers alone are enough to raise eyebrows, it’s the personality around the moment that has truly captured the internet.
Cassian shares his birthday with his mum, adding another layer of uniqueness to an already unforgettable story. Shelby leaned straight into the moment on TikTok, posting a clip that quickly exploded online, per the Independent.
“When people talk about having a big baby, like I don’t know ball,” she wrote. “But trust me…I know ball.”
The post didn’t just resonate — it went viral in a big way. It has racked up 4.2 million likes and been shared more than 738,200 times, with viewers flooding the comments to react to the sheer size of the newborn.
Naturally, the internet did what it does best.
“Did he drive y’all home afterwards?,” one user joked.
Shelby, clearly enjoying the moment, fired back in the comments with: “Y’all are tearin’ my poor fat son up in these comments,”
Behind the humour, though, there was a more delicate reality in the hours following Cassian’s arrival.
Shelby’s mother, Carolyn Hines, shared updates on Instagram, revealing that her grandson required immediate monitoring after birth — something not uncommon with larger babies.
“Cassian has been in the NICU since almost immediately after the c-section,” she wrote on July 30, a day after he was born. “When it comes to big babies, sometimes when they are born their glucose levels are out of whack and they need to be monitored.
“He is on an IV and oxygen. They will be keeping him overnight. I have not gotten to hold him in my arms or kiss his skin.”
It was a tense start, but there were encouraging signs not long after. In a follow-up update, Carolyn revealed that his oxygen levels were “almost perfect,” offering relief to the family and those following the story online.
For context, Cassian’s size is well beyond the norm. The average baby boy in the United States weighs around 7.2 pounds, while baby girls typically come in at roughly 7 pounds, according to Medical News Today.
Cassian’s arrival at nearly double that weight places him in a rare category — one that very few newborns ever reach.
While his size is remarkable, it still falls short of the all-time record.
That title dates all the way back to 1879, when a baby weighing an astonishing 22 pounds was born in the United States. Measuring 28 inches in length, the child — born to Canadian mother Anna Bates — remains the largest baby ever recorded, according to the Guinness Book of World Records.
Tragically, the baby died just eleven hours after birth and was never officially named, though his mother referred to him as “Babe.”
His father, Martin van Buren Bates, later described the child in striking terms: “He was 28” tall, weighed 22 lbs, and was perfect in every respect. He looked at birth like an ordinary child of six months,”
Both parents were notably tall, with Anna measuring 7 ft 11 in and Martin standing at 7 ft 9 in — details that only add to the scale of the story.
Back in Nashville, though, the focus remains firmly on Cassian — a baby who has already made his mark before even leaving hospital.
From record-breaking weight to viral fame within days, his arrival has turned into a story that blends shock, humour, and genuine emotion in equal measure.
And if first impressions count, Cassian has set the bar incredibly high.
