A young boy was rescued after being spotted walking alone on an elevated monorail track at Hersheypark in Pennsylvania. The incident – which occurred over the summer – has once again gone viral on social media, with comments sections hailing the man who rushed to the boy’s aid as a “hero”.

The footage shows the child standing on the Capital BlueCross Monorail track — a ride that sits at least 20 feet above the ground — with onlookers below desperately trying to guide him to safety, PEOPLE reports.

At the time, the monorail was not in operation.

According to Hershey Entertainment & Resorts, the boy had been reported missing at around 5 p.m. after becoming separated from his parents. “While our team was actively searching, the child entered a secured area for the Monorail,” a spokesperson explained to NBC News.

The company added that the attraction “was closed and safeguarded by a chained closure at the entrance and barricaded turnstile at the platform.”

Despite those precautions, the child managed to access the track — creating a dangerous situation that unfolded in front of a growing crowd.

In the video, panic quickly sets in.

Voices can be heard shouting from below, trying to guide the boy. “Keep walking!” one person yells, pointing him in a direction.

The child begins to move — before stopping again, placing his hand on his head, appearing confused and unsure of what to do next.

It’s at that moment that one bystander steps in. A man wearing a green hat climbs onto the roof of a nearby structure, positioning himself close to the track. From there, he signals for the child to come towards him.

Then, without hesitation, he makes his move.

Launching himself onto the monorail track, the man reaches the boy and lifts him to safety — prompting an immediate wave of relief from those watching below.

Cheers erupt and applause follows. And just like that, a potentially tragic situation is brought under control.

The heroic man has since been identified as John Sampson — a Pennsylvania veterinarian and father of three — who later spoke about the moment.

“Dad instincts kicked in, and then [I was] just trying to figure things out and how to get up there as fast as possible,” he told Fox 43.

Despite the widespread praise, Sampson has downplayed the attention.

He made it clear he doesn’t see himself as a hero — instead describing his actions as simply following instinct.

He also revealed an important detail about the situation, shared with permission from the boy’s family, saying, “with confirmation & permission from the boy’s family, I’m sharing that he is on the autism spectrum.”

Experts note that children with autism can sometimes “wander” or “elope,” which can lead to dangerous situations without warning. In this case, the child had reportedly been in the area for around 20 minutes before climbing onto the track.

The National Autism Association highlighted that such behaviour can happen “quietly, quickly and from any setting,” urging “compassion and understanding, not judgment, for the family.”

Thankfully, the outcome was positive, and the boy was not harmed and was reunited with his family roughly 20 minutes after being reported missing.

For Sampson, that’s all that matters. “They reached out to me this morning, so we were able to talk, and, obviously, [there was] a lot of thanks and everything, which was wonderful,” he said. “And I’m so happy to hear that he’s obviously back with his family, which is the biggest thing out of all of this.”

Rather than accepting praise, Sampson has encouraged people to focus their support elsewhere. “The attention should not be on me, but focused on educating and supporting organisations that research, advocate and impact kids like the boy who thankfully made it home safely with his family,” he added.

He specifically suggested donating to causes such as the Eagles Autism Foundation, as well as local animal shelters.

Hersheypark also acknowledged the incident and the response that followed, saying in its statement: “We are grateful for the vigilance of our guests and the swift response of our team, and we remain committed to maintaining the highest levels of guest safety throughout Hersheypark.”

What could have been a devastating incident instead became a powerful example of quick thinking, instinct, and collective concern. And while the internet may call him a hero, the man at the centre of it all seems focused on something far simpler: Getting a child safely back where he belongs.
