Tommy Lynch shared the story in a now-viral Facebook post, explaining how a seemingly serious medical emergency quickly spiralled into one of the most embarrassing moments of his life.

What started as a worrying morning ended with doctors, nurses and thousands of people online all laughing at the same unexpected culprit: a brand new set of bedsheets.

Lynch began his post by explaining why he felt compelled to share the experience publicly, writing: “Bit of a long post this but feel I need to post it for awareness..”

The situation unfolded when he woke up feeling completely drained — something that initially seemed like a genuine health concern.

“Not long ago.. i woke up feeling extremely tired, eyes heavy & energy levels low.. i came down to the door & my mate took one look at me & said ‘you need to go hospital.. like now’..”

According to Lynch, his friend immediately realised something was seriously wrong. Lynch continued: “He’s a ‘Carer’ & seen this before & knew the drill.. i was bright blue.. & he said get ready we’re going A&E..”

Despite the urgency of the situation, Lynch admitted he still thought the hospital visit might be relatively short.

“So I put fresh boxers on thinking I’d be in over night, i got ready, i was just spraying my hair & my mates like ‘come ooooooon.. what you doing.. we need to go Tommy’,” the post continued.

The pair then rushed through traffic toward Burton Hospital as concern continued to grow.

Once they arrived, Lynch was unsure how to even begin explaining what had happened, adding: “At the reception I didn’t really know what to say but.. ‘Hi.. eeerm iv woke up blue’..”

The hospital staff clearly realised the situation could be serious, as things escalated quickly from there.

“There was no waiting in the 4 hour queue there.. the receptionist looked at me in total shock.. she went & grabbed a doctor straight away & i was on a bed within minutes surrounded by a load of other doctors all asking me alot of questions while on oxygen,” he recalled.

Doctors began trying to work out what had caused the bizarre symptoms. “They’d not seen someone like this & so blue in 10 years & still be alive.. I said im just tired & hungry..”

Then came the moment everything suddenly made sense.

While preparing to take blood, a doctor wiped Lynch’s arm with an alcohol wipe — and something strange happened.

“The doctor wipes my arm with an alcohol wipe… the wipe turns blue,” he writes.

At that point, the penny finally dropped.

Days earlier, a friend had recommended he try a new bedding material designed to keep him warmer at night.

“Few days before this my mates like.. ‘oh you really need to try ‘brushed cotton’ bed sheets as they keep you much warmer at night as opposed to polyester sheets’ that are cold to get into (he’d seen my story of my new bed & bedding) & went & brought me a set (how lovely of him),” Lynch explained.

But there was one crucial piece of advice missing. “However, he failed to mention that they need washing before use…”

The dark blue dye from the sheets had transferred directly onto Lynch’s skin overnight.

“Well the dye had came out of the sheets & dyed my skin all over from Head to Toe & wasnt washing off with normal soap,” he continued.

Realising what had happened, Lynch quickly jumped off the hospital bed — and apologised to the stunned medical staff. “I quickly got off the bed & said ‘oh my god im so sorry to have waisted all your time’.. I’ll be off now.. they all had a good laugh & it made their day thank god..”

He added that by the time he left the hospital, the embarrassment had fully set in. “I sharply left more red than blue at this point!!”

Despite the awkward situation, Lynch decided to share the story online as a tongue-in-cheek “life hack.”

“So bit of a life hack here.. if you want to skip the waiting area just buy Brushed cotton sheets dont wash them before hand & you’ll go straight through to a bed no waiting haha,” he quipped.

The story quickly exploded across social media, with thousands of people reacting to the unexpected twist.

Many commenters shared similar stories of clothing or bedding dye causing strange reactions.

One user wrote: “My dad had the same with his jeans […] he had blue hands and legs…the GP was baffled by the cause”

Another reader shared a similar mix-up involving footwear, commenting: “My father had new navy moccasins when he went into hospital and thought he had bruised feet.”

Another added: “The lesson learned is anything brand new wash before use.”

Others simply enjoyed the absurdity of the situation, with one person commmenting: “This really made me laugh, thanks for sharing.”

One comment joked: “Bro turned into avatar and went to the hospital.”

So, if there’s one takeaway people seem to agree on, it’s this: always wash new bedding before sleeping on it.
