Just when social media users and conspiracy theorists thought they had cracked the case, the truth has now come out.

A glittering awards night in Paris. A rare public appearance. And within hours, social media had convinced itself that Jim Carrey wasn’t actually Jim Carrey at all.

What should have been a straightforward celebration at the 51st César Film Awards at L’Olympia spiralled into one of the most bizarre celebrity conspiracies of the year.

Carrey, who has largely stepped away from the spotlight in recent years, attended the ceremony in the French capital last Thursday to receive a lifetime achievement award. It was a significant moment — a Hollywood icon honoured on one of France’s biggest film stages.

The 64-year-old even delivered an emotional acceptance speech entirely in French, paying tribute to his father.

But online, attention quickly drifted from the star’s legacy to his appearance.

Footage of Carrey on the red carpet began circulating almost immediately. In one clip, as he calmly signed autographs outside the venue, a member of the public could be heard asking: “Mr. Jim Carrey, every fake news is saying you are not Jim Carrey. That’s true or not? Please, give answer,”

Carrey didn’t bite. He kept signing. Composed. Unbothered.

Still, that didn’t stop the speculation and comment sections filled rapidly with bizarre theories.

“No way this is the real Jim,” one person wrote.

“That’s not him. Jim Carrey’s always had brown eyes prominent brown eyes. This is the worst impersonation ever,” another claimed.

“Must have had a lot of work done to his face. Looks very different,” added someone else, with another adding: “I’m no conspiracy theorist but that’s not Jim Carrey.”

The theories ranged from cosmetic surgery to cloning. Some even suggested he’d been replaced entirely.

Once again, there is no evidence The Mask star has undergone any procedure.

The frenzy intensified days later when SFX makeup artist Alexis Stone posted an image to Instagram showing a photo of Carrey from the night alongside prosthetics. The caption read: “Alexis Stone as Jim Carrey in Paris.”

Given Stone’s reputation for extreme celebrity transformations, the post poured petrol on an already blazing fire.

Even Megan Fox weighed in under the post, writing: “I can’t handle any more stress right now I need to know if this is real.”

Suddenly, what had started as online curiosity felt like a full-blown digital mystery.

The reality, however, was far less dramatic.

On Monday, Carrey addressed the situation via his representative, who emphatically confirmed to the Daily Mail that the actor was indeed present at the ceremony in person.

Further clarity came from the César Academy itself. General delegate Gregory Caulier dismissed the uproar entirely, branding it a “non-issue”.

“Jim Carrey’s visit has been planned since this summer. From the outset, he was extremely touched by the Academy’s invitation,” Caulier told Variety. He also revealed that Carrey had spent eight months preparing to deliver his speech in French and was supported by a dozen family members on the night.

In other words: no masks. No clones. No Hollywood body doubles. Just an actor deservedly receiving his flowers.

It was a rare sighting of a man who has, by all accounts, embraced a quieter life.

According to The Sun, Carrey now lives off-grid in a hideaway in Hawaii under a fake name. While he is reportedly offered three to four movies a year, he turns them down.

So, there we have it – No mystery. No twist ending. Just the beloved Jim Carrey.
