It was supposed to be a night of celebration for one of the greatest actors in a generation.

Instead, social media users have been left with questions – turning celebrations into conspiracies.

When Jim Carrey stepped out at the 51st César Awards in Paris, the moment should have been about legacy. The comedy icon was there to receive an Honorary César Award at L’Olympia, recognised as “one of the most original voices in modern cinema.” But within hours of photos and videos circulating online, the spotlight shifted from tribute to theory.

Carrey, who has largely kept a low profile in recent years, instantly became the centre of a viral storm. Outside of his role as Dr Robotnik (aka Dr Eggman) in the live-actions Sonic The Hedgehod movie franchise, public appearances have been few and far between. That scarcity only amplified the reaction.

In one clip filmed outside the venue, the Hollywood star calmly stopped to sign autographs for fans. Then came the moment that summed up the mood online.

“Mr. Jim Carrey, every fake news is saying you are not Jim Carrey. That’s true or not? Please, give answer,” one member of the public could be heard asking.

Carrey appeared unfazed. He continued signing. No direct response. No visible irritation. Just composure.

Online, however, things escalated quickly.

Speculation intensified as social media users zoomed in on images from the ceremony. What was meant to honour his contribution to film instead became a debate about his face. Some claimed he looked “puffy” or “unrecognizable.” Others suggested his eye colour had “changed” from brown to green. A number of posts went even further, alleging he had been cloned, replaced or was wearing a hyper-realistic mask.

A small minority shared more extreme claims, asserting without evidence that the real Carrey had been substituted, even “disposed of” for allegedly speaking out about the dark side of Hollywood.

The tone ranged from confusion to outright certainty. One X user wrote: “That’s not Jim. 1000%.”

Another posted: “That ain’t him. They replaced him.”

Elsewhere, someone added: “Something feels off.”

Over on Reddit, more concerned social media users voiced their thoughts, with one person writing: “I am not into any conspiracies, but then I could swear this is not Jim.”

Others agreed that the individual we saw was not Carrey, but they had more light-hearted theories – with some believing that The Mask star simply couldn’t be bothered to make a public appearance, so sent a lookalike in his place for fun. “I was thinking he hired an impersonator to accept an award for him while he was on vacation. This is a very Jim thing to do,” one person wrote.

It didn’t seem to matter that there was no evidence behind the claims. The theories ran anyway.

Carrey has long been known for contorting his face in ways many actors can’t — elastic expressions that defined roles in The Grince, Bruce Almighty and Ace Ventura. But this time, viewers decided something was different. Some suggested cosmetic procedures. Others argued his mannerisms felt “off,” describing him as “a completely different person.”

And yet, on the night itself, there was little sign of anything unusual.

Carrey appeared composed and confident during the ceremony in Paris. He even delivered part of his speech in French and gave fans a rare glimpse into his personal life, thanking his girlfriend, Min Ah, for her support.

The reaction says more about internet culture than it does about the actor.

Fortunately, the 64-year-old star has had a number of supporters in comment sections, with some stating steadfast that it is indeed Jim Carrey – it’s just that he’s aged and people don’t want to accept that fact. “This is 100% Jim.. you all are way too obsessed with conspiracy theories,” one person wrote on Reddit.

Another added: “You people are nuts! He is in his mid sixties. This is all 100% aging. All these appearances y’all are talking about happened over 10 years ago. A lot can change in a decade. Take your tin foil hats off and go touch grass.”

Carrey has been open about stepping back from Hollywood. Speaking to Access Hollywood in 2022 while promoting Sonic the Hedgehog 2, he explained what retirement meant to him — though he left the door slightly ajar.

He said that if “angels bring down some sort of script that’s written in gold ink” that would be important, he may consider coming out of retirement. “I really like my quiet life and I really like putting paint on canvas and I really love my spiritual life and I feel like – and this is something you might never hear another celebrity say as long as time exists – I have enough,” he said.

It was a rare admission in an industry that rarely talks about job satisfaction over a big paycheck.

Despite reducing his Hollywood output, he has indicated he may return for future projects, including a potential role in Sonic the Hedgehog 4, which is slated for release in 2027.

For now, though, the conspiracy theories remain exactly that — theories.

There is no evidence to support claims that Carrey has been replaced or cloned. The suggestions that he was “removed” and substituted are entirely unsubstantiated. The speculation around cosmetic procedures is just that: speculation.

But in the age of viral posts and split-second judgements, one appearance was enough to ignite a digital frenzy.

Carrey, meanwhile, carried on signing autographs in Paris, seemingly unbothered as the noise swirled around him.
